Confessions of a Compulsive Chopper (Shopper)

Ready to shake things up in the kitchen? It’s time to chop, dice, and slice your way to culinary greatness—all while keeping your wallet happy. But be warned, it’s not just about chopping veggies—it’s about slicing through those impulsive shopping urges too.

Not long ago, I did something I hadn’t done in years—I took a weekend off. It felt amazing. We had friends over and I whipped up some fresh salsa …

Enter my go-to kitchen sidekick, the Chop Wizard. This little gem saved the day by effortlessly chopping tomatoes, onions, bell peppers, jalapenos, garlic, and cilantro. Trust me, it’s a game-changer! This thing is amazing and super inexpensive.

It chopped the tomatoes fast and uniformly—without launching seeds and pulp across the room or turning the whole thing into a squished mess. I chopped onions, garlic, and peppers, too.

For my famous Pico de Gallo salsa, you’ll need these freshly chopped ingredients: freshly chopped onion, tomato, jalapeno (go easy!), green bell pepper, fresh garlic, and cilantro. Mix ’em up with lime juice, salt, and pepper (all to taste), and voila! You’ve got yourself a tasty treat.

Confessions of a Compulsive Chopper

I’m just smitten with my chopper—it’s become a staple in my kitchen adventures. Honestly, I find myself seeking out things to chop just for the sheer joy of it. I’m a chopping fool! And the results are always so amazing. I even took Chop Wizard to the office a while back and held a demonstration for my tolerant staff.

My Favorite Vegetable Chopper

I know I run the risk of this sounding like I’m a paid spokesperson for Chop Wizard. It’s just that this little gadget has saved me so much time in the kitchen. And the best part? It inspires me to get creative and make things from scratch, which, let’s face it, saves me a pretty penny too!

I stumbled upon my Chop Wizard during a late-night TV infomercial binge years ago. And guess what? They still make it!

For my TikTok aficionados, you might recognize the Chop Wizard as the FullStar Vegetable Chopper. While the Chop Wizard is the OG, this new kid on the block is causing quite a stir on TikTok. With four blades for slicing, dicing, julienning, and even ribbon spiralizing, it’s one excellent, seriously upgraded option I can recommend if chopping is your jam.

Confessions of a Compulsive Shopper

But hey, let’s be real—not every purchase from those late-night ads or PBS specials has been a win. I’ve had my fair share of disappointments, courtesy of my impulsive tendencies. Looking back, it’s a bit cringe-worthy to tally up the junk and cash I’ve squandered over the years.

When it comes to my shopping tendencies, let’s just say I’m compulsive with a capital C—like, impulse buys are my middle name. Picture this: on what might’ve been the worst day of my life, I found myself knee-deep in financial ruin, thanks to a habit of using credit cards to sustain a lifestyle we couldn’t afford. I never meant to steer us down this path, but 12 years of blissful ignorance about our finances came crashing down hard.

Hitting rock bottom was the wake-up call I sorely needed. But let me tell you, those early days were tough—I had to face the cold, hard truth of what everything truly cost, armed only with cash and a newfound sense of responsibility.

A Cheat Sheet for the Compulsive Shopper

Over the years, I’ve developed a handy cheat sheet to keep myself in check. These questions are like a lifeline, helping me navigate the tempting aisles and online carts with ease.

Here’s how it goes:

1. Do I need it?

This is the golden question. Not “want,” but “need.” Will this purchase truly enhance my life or fulfill a necessity, or is it just a fleeting desire?

2. Can I afford it?

Before swiping that card or clicking “checkout,” I pause and assess my financial situation. Can I comfortably afford this purchase without jeopardizing my budget or financial goals?

3. Do I already have something that will do?

Ah, the classic case of redundancy. Before adding another item to my collection, I consider if I already own something that serves the same purpose. No need for duplicates!

4. Can I wait for a more reasonable alternative?

Impulse buys rarely lead to satisfaction. I challenge myself to step back and explore if there’s a more budget-friendly option available or if waiting for a sale or promotion is a smarter move.

5. Am I certain I have located the best deal?

With the plethora of online retailers and price comparison tools at our fingertips, I make sure to scout out the best deal before committing. Saving a few bucks here and there adds up!

6. Am I willing to submit to a self-imposed cooling-off period to think it over?

Sometimes, all it takes is a little time to cool off and reassess. I’ve learned to embrace the power of patience by implementing a self-imposed waiting period before making any major purchases. It’s amazing how clarity emerges with a bit of distance.

I discovered the Chop Wizard when we were visiting my brother and sister-in-love many years ago. Becky was making Jambalaya which required a lot of chopping. I was amazed at how quickly she got the job done with her Chop Wizard. It was a huge time saver when I was cooking for a camp. I find it especially helpful to dice strawberries. It is one of the most used tools in my kitchen.

My secret is my reminder to self, “You have everything you need.” Honestly, that’s the truth! So often after I decide not to make a purchase I almost immediately find something similar in my home. I love the cheat sheet (and I’ve saved it as an extra help! Thank you, Mary!

Your post couldn’t be more timely! We are going through my dad’s things (sadly, he passed away last year) and he has a Chop Wizard (like me, he loved useful kitchen gadgets). I’ll have to rescue it from the estate sale items and make sure it goes to a good home—mine! Then I’ll have to learn how to use it!

I no longer subscribe to magazines and most ads go right into the recycle bin. Also, shopping just for something to do is out. Eliminate temptations.

I love my original chop wizard. I use it mostly for onions, makes it a breeze with no tears, not to mention way faster than dicing by hand. I use my mandolin for slicing the desired thickness, then put 2 or so on the chopper. Done in a few seconds. Also, great using the same method for apples you want to make tarts with.

My best strategy to curb shopping is not to watch QVC or HSN. However, they do have some items that I like to purchase, so i have to keep my eyes open. Oh dear.

Mary, love me some Vidalia Chop Wizard. I am on my second one, and wore the first one out. This one I knocked out a couple of chunks from the bottom and covered the holes with duct tape (my go to solution for broken things) and it is still going strong. I am a kitchen gadget guy and this is my favorite. Thanks for introducing me to it long ago. Best to you…always.
