40-Day Christmas Challenge | Day 15: Plan for the Nights You Won’t Want to Cook

There is a particular time of day when otherwise sensible dinner decisions become very difficult.

You’re tired. You’re hungry. Everyone else is hungry. Something took longer than expected. And now someone wants to know what’s for dinner as though you’ve been withholding this information for your own amusement.

This is not when I do my finest planning.

Christmas gives us more of these nights than usual. Shopping runs late. There’s a concert, a party, a school event, an appointment, a package that absolutely must get mailed.

And still, inexplicably, people expect dinner.

So today we’re not promising to cook every night until Christmas.

We’re making a plan for the nights when we already know we won’t want to.

Today’s Challenge

Look at your calendar and identify three nights when dinner is likely to be a problem.

Then decide now what you’ll eat. Not necessarily what you’ll cook. What you’ll eat.

There’s an important difference.

Do This Today

1. Find your danger nights.

Pull out the calendar from Day 5.

Look for the evenings most likely to leave you standing in the kitchen at 6:12 p.m. with no plan and very little enthusiasm.

Late workday. Christmas program. Shopping trip. Travel day. Back-to-back commitments. Guests arriving.

Whatever makes dinner harder at your house.

Pick three.

2. Give each night an easy dinner.

Now decide what you’re going to eat on those nights.

One might get the freezer meal you made on Day 13. Another might be grilled cheese and soup, eggs and toast, quesadillas, sandwiches, pasta or something else you can make without consulting three recipes and dirtying every pan you own.

And one might be takeout.

Yes. On purpose.

If buying dinner on a particularly packed night fits your Christmas plan and saves your sanity, that’s not failure. That’s using money where it matters.

The expensive version is often the unplanned one: everybody is starving, nobody can decide, and suddenly convenience costs considerably more than you meant to spend.

3. Keep one emergency dinner in reserve.

Choose one easy meal you can keep on hand for the night that wasn’t on the calendar.

Frozen pizza. Soup and bread. Pasta and sauce. Breakfast for dinner. Something from the freezer. Whatever your household will actually eat.

This is not the night to impress anyone. It’s dinner.

Quick Win

Find your busiest upcoming evening and decide what dinner will be.

Write it on the calendar.

Done.

Convenience Isn’t the Problem

I have no objection to paying for convenience when I’ve decided it’s worth paying for.

What gets expensive is buying convenience by default because there was no plan.

There’s a big difference between saying, “Thursday is going to be nuts, so we’re budgeting for pizza,” and discovering Thursday at 7 p.m. that nobody has eaten and ordering whatever can get to the house fastest.

One is a plan.

The other is surrender with a delivery fee.

And your easy dinner doesn’t have to come entirely from one place. I call these semi-homemade meals: combine one convenient purchased item with what you already have at home and let each do the part it does best.

A rotisserie chicken with the salad you already have at home counts. So does takeout soup with your own sandwiches, or a purchased entrée with easy sides from the pantry.

Dinner does not care whether every part of it came through the same door.

Use the Easy Food

Remember what you found on Day 10?

This is an excellent time to put it to work.

That frozen soup, box of pasta, jar of sauce or package of tortillas wasn’t waiting in the pantry to win a prize for perfect attendance. Use it.

And if your emergency dinner requires one or two things you don’t have, add them to your next grocery list now.

That’s the point of planning ahead. You’re making the easy choice easy.

Why It Matters

The problem with busy nights isn’t that we’re weak and can’t resist the drive-thru.

It’s that dinner keeps showing up every single evening whether we’ve made room for it or not.

A few decisions made ahead of time can save money, certainly. But they also save something I value just as much on a packed December evening: one more decision.

You already know what’s for dinner. That’s enough.

Your Turn

What’s your easiest dinner for a night when cooking isn’t happening? Tell us in the comments. The embarrassingly easy ones are usually the most useful.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow we’re checking the Christmas spending plan.

Not to scold ourselves over what we’ve spent.

We just need to know whether the plan we made on Day 4 still matches what’s actually happening.

Much easier to make a small correction now than discover a large one later.
