40-Day Christmas Challenge | Day 34: Don’t Let the Algorithm Shop for You

November 1, 2025/Updated September 28, 2026/0 Comments/in Christmas Challenge /by Mary Hunt

Woman carrying Christmas presents while shopping on her smartphone

You can be completely finished Christmas shopping and still somehow find yourself shopping.

It’s remarkable.

You check the status of one order and there’s a sale. You look up one gift and suddenly you’re being shown twelve other things the recipient might also enjoy. You open your email and discover that something you did not know existed until 14 seconds ago is 30% off for a VERY LIMITED TIME.

And now you’re thinking about buying it.

This is not because you’ve suddenly become terrible with money.

It’s because stores are very good at keeping us shopping.

Today we’re going to stop letting them decide when we’re done.

Today’s Challenge

Go back to your Master Giving List.

Who still needs a gift? What do you actually still need to buy?

That’s your shopping list now.

Not what showed up in your feed. Not what an email says is selling fast. Not what somebody on social media insists every woman, man, teenager, cook, traveler or dog owner needs for Christmas.

If it isn’t something you’re still planning to buy, you don’t need to shop for it.

Do This Today

1. Check the list before you shop.

Look at your Master Giving List.

If everyone is finished, here’s some excellent news: You are finished shopping.

You do not need to keep looking in case a better Christmas presents itself.

If someone still needs a gift, decide what you’re looking for before you open a store, search engine or shopping app.

Go in with a job.

2. Turn down the shopping noise.

If promotional emails are getting to you, unsubscribe or ignore them. If store notifications keep announcing sales, turn them off. If browsing social media keeps turning into browsing products, notice that.

You don’t have to abandon technology. Just stop giving every retailer, app and feed an open invitation to interrupt your Christmas with another thing to buy.

And yes, the offline version exists too. Catalogs. Store displays. Checkout aisles. The giant SALE sign you can see from the parking lot. Same rule.

Your list decides what you need. The advertisement doesn’t.

3. Put unplanned purchases on pause.

See something that suddenly seems perfect? Fine. Don’t buy it yet.

Give an unplanned purchase 24 hours if you reasonably can.

Tomorrow, ask:

Who is this for?

Does it fit the Christmas budget?

Would I still want to buy it if it weren’t on sale?

A surprising number of urgently necessary Christmas purchases become considerably less urgent overnight.

Quick Win

Close one shopping tab.

Delete one promotional email.

Turn off one store notification.

Then look at your Master Giving List instead. Done.

A Sale Doesn’t Create a Need

This is one of those things I know perfectly well and can still manage to forget. Saving 40% on something you weren’t going to buy is not the same as saving money. You spent 60%.

That may still be a perfectly good purchase if it’s something you genuinely want or need. But the sale itself is not the reason.

Christmas makes this especially tricky because almost anything can be justified as generosity. It’s for the kids. It’s for the house. It’s for Christmas morning. It’s just one more little thing.

Those little things have an impressive ability to find one another.

Your Finished Gifts Can Stay Finished

Remember the person whose gift you already bought? They’re done.

Then you see something else. Oh, she’d love that.

She might.

That doesn’t mean she needs that too.

You don’t have to keep improving a finished gift every time the internet produces another possibility.

Sometimes the most useful words in Christmas shopping are: I already bought her gift.

And leave it there.

Shopping Is Different From Searching

If you still need something, by all means use the internet. Search for the thing. Compare prices. Read reviews. Check shipping. Buy what fits your needs and your budget.

Technology is tremendously useful when you’re telling it what you’re looking for. It becomes less useful when you’re asking it what else you should want.

That’s the distinction I want us to notice today.

Why It Matters

We’ve spent 33 days making decisions on purpose. What matters. What we can afford. Who we’re giving to. What we’re making. What we’re skipping. When we’re done.

Those decisions are worth protecting.

The closer we get to Christmas, the easier it is to start second-guessing them because somebody somewhere has found one more thing we could buy.

Maybe it’s wonderful. We still don’t have to buy it.

Spend where it matters. Skip what doesn’t.

And when your list says you’re finished, believe it.

Your Turn

What gets you most often? The sale email? The checkout aisle? Social media recommendations? That innocent little “You might also like…”? Tell us in the comments. I have a feeling “You might also like…” has cost some of us quite enough already.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow we’re talking about generosity.

Not how much you should give. Not how many people you should help. And definitely not how to turn generosity into another Christmas project.

We’re going to make generosity fit the life, time and budget you actually have.
