40-Day Christmas Challenge | Day 10: Make Room in Your Pantry and Freezer

November 1, 2025/Updated October 20, 2026/0 Comments/in Christmas Challenge /by Mary Hunt

Woman taking a bag of frozen vegetables from the freezer

There’s a peculiar thing that happens in the kitchen around Christmas.

We start buying food for what’s coming while completely ignoring the food that’s already there.

The freezer gets fuller. The pantry gets tighter. Then the big holiday grocery haul arrives and suddenly we’re trying to wedge a turkey into a freezer currently occupied by three hamburger buns, half a bag of meatballs and something wrapped in foil that nobody can identify.

Today we’re making some room.

And if dinner happens to already be paid for? Even better.

Today’s Challenge

Take a quick look through your pantry, refrigerator and freezer for perfectly good food you’ve already bought. We’re looking for two things:

Food you can use now, and food that may be useful for Christmas later.

This is not a no-spend challenge. And it’s definitely not an invitation to create dinner from kidney beans, mustard and freezer-burned peas simply because they’re technically food.

Use what makes sense. Buy the missing pieces you need.

Do This Today

1. Find what should be used first.

Start with the freezer.

Take the kind of look that involves actually moving a few things around, not staring inside for eight seconds, deciding there’s nothing to eat and closing the door.

What’s hiding in there?

Meat or poultry? Frozen vegetables? Bread? Soup? A forgotten casserole? Half a bag of meatballs? Something you cooked and froze so responsibly that you’ve now completely forgotten it exists?

Then check the refrigerator and pantry for things that should be used soon.

Pull those items forward or make a quick USE FIRST note.

2. Turn what you found into a meal or two.

Now look for combinations.

Chicken + rice + frozen vegetables? Dinner.

Pasta + sauce + that Italian sausage in the freezer? Dinner.

Soup + bread + salad? Also dinner.

You’re not trying to empty the kitchen. You’re using what you already own as the starting point instead of automatically starting at the grocery store.

Not sure what to do with the odds and ends you found? My basic casserole formula shows you how to turn pantry staples, freezer finds and leftovers into dinner without needing a specific recipe.

Choose one or two meals and buy only the missing pieces you need to make them work.

3. Notice what’s already useful for Christmas.

While you’re looking, keep an eye out for things you’ll probably use later.

Butter in the freezer. Broth. Baking supplies. Nuts. Chocolate chips. Frozen appetizers. Meat you bought on sale. Whatever you know you’ll use later.

Don’t use those up just for the satisfaction of clearing space. Make a note and leave them there.

The goal isn’t an empty freezer. It’s a freezer you know how to use.

Quick Win

No time for all three?

Find one thing that needs to be used and make your next dinner plan around it.

One meal decided. One thing put to use. Day 10 counts.

Don’t Turn This Into a Pantry Makeover

Please don’t empty every cupboard onto the kitchen counter. We’re on Day 10 of a Christmas Challenge, not auditioning for an organizing show.

If you find something that’s clearly spoiled, deal with it. If you find something you know your household is never going to eat, make a sensible decision about that too.

Otherwise, we’re not alphabetizing the spices or transferring pasta into matching containers.

See what you have. Use some of it. Make a little room. That’s enough.

Why Make Room Now?

Because kitchen space becomes surprisingly valuable at Christmas.

You may eventually need room for cookie dough, holiday desserts, groceries, make-ahead food, extra ice or the aforementioned turkey.

And there’s another kind of room we’re making today: room in the grocery budget.

A meal made mostly from food you’ve already bought means fewer things you need to buy for dinner this week.

Maybe that trims this week’s grocery bill. Maybe it simply keeps perfectly good food from being forgotten and replaced.

Either way, you’ve gotten more value from money you’ve already spent.

What If There’s Not Much There?

Then you’re finished early.

If your freezer is under control, your pantry is lean and you don’t have much that needs using, excellent.

We’re not trying to manufacture a project where there isn’t one. Christmas is not grading you.

Why It Matters

The point isn’t to see how long you can avoid the grocery store. It’s to stop overlooking resources you already have while spending money on more.

Use what you’ve already paid for. Spend a little less where you can. Make room for what’s coming.

That’s a pretty good return on fifteen minutes in the kitchen.

Your Turn

What’s the thing that has been living in your freezer the longest? And more important: do you have a plan for it now? Tell us in the comments. I’m expecting at least a few mysterious foil packages.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow we’re going looking for something even more fun than forgotten food: forgotten money.

Gift cards. Store credits. Rewards. Cash you’ve tucked away.

Before we spend more money on Christmas, let’s find out whether we already have some waiting to be put back to work.
