21 Ways to Use Vaseline That Will Amaze You (Who Knew?!)

If you’ve ever bought a jar of Vaseline, chances are it’s still lurking in the back of your bathroom cabinet, waiting for its moment to shine. That little tub of petroleum jelly might just be the most under appreciated item in your home. You thought it was just for chapped lips? Ha! Vaseline is basically the Swiss Army knife of household products.

Here are some shockingly practical, sometimes bizarre, and occasionally life-saving ways to use Vaseline that will make you wonder how you ever survived without it.

Surprising Beauty Uses for Vaseline

1. Make Perfume Last All Day (Not Just an Hour)

Dab a little Vaseline on your wrists, neck, or behind your ears before spritzing on perfume. The jelly acts as a moisture-locking base, helping the scent linger much longer than it would on dry skin. Bonus: Less perfume wasted means you won’t have to restock your favorite fragrance quite as often!

2. Tame Eyebrows and Baby Hairs

If your eyebrows have a rebellious streak, a tiny dab of Vaseline will keep them in check without that stiff, crunchy feeling you get from gels. And if baby hairs around your hairline have declared war on your blowout, a quick swipe will lay them down without making your forehead look greasy.

3. Heal Cracked Heels While You Sleep

Slather your feet with Vaseline, slip on some cotton socks, and let it work its magic overnight. By morning, your heels will be baby-soft—and you won’t feel like you’re exfoliating the sheets with sandpaper feet.

4. Make Your Own Lip Gloss (In Any Shade You Want!)

Mix a little Vaseline with a dab of blush, crushed lipstick, or even a touch of shimmery eyeshadow for a custom lip gloss. It’s a budget-friendly way to repurpose old makeup and create a shade that’s uniquely yours.

5. Avoid Nail Polish Messes

Before you paint your nails, apply a thin layer of Vaseline around your cuticles. If your DIY manicure skills lean more abstract art than salon-perfect, this trick makes cleanup a breeze—just wipe away the polish that lands outside the lines.

6. Slip Off a Stuck Ring (Without the Panic)

That terrifying moment when a ring won’t budge off your finger? Don’t reach for the soap just yet. Rub a little Vaseline around the band and twist gently. It’ll slide right off—no emergency ice baths required.

7. Melt Away Stubborn Makeup (Even Waterproof!)

Waterproof mascara and long-wear eyeliner are great—until you try to remove them. Vaseline dissolves even the most stubborn makeup without stripping your skin or turning your face into a blotchy mess.

8. Rescue a Chapped, Over-Wiped Nose

Cold and allergy season can leave your nose feeling like it’s been through battle. A little Vaseline soothes raw, irritated skin and acts as a barrier to prevent further chafing. Bonus: It also helps keep that Rudolph-red glow in check.

9. Prevent Hair Dye Mishaps

Before you color your hair at home, rub Vaseline along your hairline, ears, and even your hands if you’re prone to spills. It creates a protective barrier that prevents dye stains—because nobody wants a surprise forehead tint that lasts for days.

10. Keep Razor Blades Sharper, Longer

After shaving, pat your razor blades dry and apply a thin coat of Vaseline to prevent rust. This helps extend the life of your blades, meaning you won’t have to replace them as often—because these days new razors are basically the price of a mortgage payment.

Household Fixes Made Easy with Vaseline

11. Stop Squeaky Doors (and Furniture That Talks Back)

If a door hinge, cabinet, or chair is squeaking like it belongs in a haunted house, rub a little Vaseline on the offending joint. It’s a quick, mess-free fix—and definitely cheaper than calling in an exorcist.

12. Shine Up Leather Shoes, Bags, and Jackets

Dull leather losing its luster? A small dab of Vaseline worked in with a soft cloth can restore shine to shoes, handbags, or even a leather jacket—without leaving behind a greasy residue. Just buff well, and your leather will look polished, not like it had an unfortunate run-in with a butter dish.

13. Fix a Stuck Zipper

When your zipper refuses to budge and you’re two tugs away from declaring war on your favorite jacket, rub a tiny bit of Vaseline along the teeth. A few gentle pulls, and it should glide smoothly again.

14. Keep Ants Away (Without Chemicals!)

Tired of ants turning your kitchen into their personal buffet? Smear a thin line of Vaseline around pet food bowls, windowsills, or any entry points. Ants won’t cross it—apparently, even they know when they’ve met their match.

15. Disguise Scratches on Wood Furniture

Minor scratches or scuffs making your furniture look like it’s seen one too many wrestling matches? Rub a bit of Vaseline into the marks, let it sit for a few hours (or overnight), then buff it out. It helps hydrate the wood and reduce the appearance of scratches—without requiring a full furniture refinishing project.

16. Make Shower Curtains Glide Effortlessly

If your shower curtain rings stick and screech every time you pull them, rub a little Vaseline along the curtain rod. Suddenly, they’ll slide with gliding on butter.

17. Stop Battery Corrosion Before It Starts

A thin coat of Vaseline on car battery terminals can help prevent corrosion, ensuring your car starts reliably—because nobody enjoys the “guess if my battery is dead” game on a Monday morning.

18. Vaseline as a DIYer’s Secret Weapon

Painting a room? Smear a little Vaseline on doorknobs, hinges, or screws to keep paint from sticking where it shouldn’t. It’s a lot easier to wipe off afterward than scraping off dried paint—or realizing three weeks later that your doorknob is now permanently “accented.”

More Vaseline Hacks You Have to Try

19. Soothe Dry Dog Paws (With a Little Caution)

If your pup’s paws are feeling more like sandpaper than soft pads, a dab of Vaseline can help. Just use it sparingly—while it’s not toxic, it’s also not exactly a doggy delicacy. Too much licking could lead to tummy troubles, so if your dog treats everything like a snack, you might want to opt for a pet-safe balm instead.

20. Keep Pumpkins from Rotting Too Soon

If you love carving pumpkins but hate how they turn into mush in record time, rub Vaseline on the cut edges. It creates a moisture barrier that slows down decay—so your jack-o’-lantern can haunt your porch for more than just a couple of nights.

21. Keep Your Jack-o’-Lantern Glowing Longer

Beyond preserving the edges, a thin coat of Vaseline inside the pumpkin helps lock in moisture so it doesn’t collapse into itself like a forgotten science experiment.

The Bottom Line

Who knew Vaseline was basically the duct tape of beauty, home fixes, and even pet care? Whether it’s reviving your shoes, rescuing your skin, or saving your sanity, this little jar earns its keep. So go ahead, dig it out of the back of your cabinet and start putting it to good use.

If you picked more grapefruit than you can eat—wash them, apply a thin layer of Vaseline and refrigerate. The grapefruit will be good for several weeks.

I rub Vaseline into my hands and put on cotton gloves before going to bed. It helps with dry, peeling skin, eczema, and more, and my hands feel better in the morning. And my dermatologist approves.

Our big upright freezer in our garage (packed to the max!) the rubber seal around the door was beginning to need replaced and was not sealing the door shut tight. I found a Youtube video that said to smear petroleum jelly on the seal and it would work as a fix to make the door seal until a new seal could be installed. It worked like a charm!

After two skin cancer surgeries, my dermatologist instructed me to apply Vaseline to the incisions every day for several weeks. Nothing else but a bandage. It kept the skin moist, kept bacteria out and I have no scar.
