If you’re like me, you love a good Chex Mix—especially around the holidays. But let’s be honest, standing by the oven and stirring every 10 minutes isn’t the most fun way to spend your time when there are presents to wrap or Christmas movies to binge-watch.

Using a slow cooker for Chex Mix takes all the work out of it. You get perfectly seasoned, crispy snacks without constantly babysitting the oven. It’s a true set-it-and-forget-it situation. Just toss your ingredients in, set the timer, and let the slow cooker do its magic. Not only does it save time, but it also keeps things simple, leaving you more room to enjoy the festive moments (or sneak a handful of Chex Mix while no one’s looking).

Ingredients You’ll Need for Perfect Chex Mix

Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • Thin Pretzel Sticks: f you’re not a pretzel fan, feel free to swap them out for pretzel twists or even pretzel snaps for a different shape (and texture!) experience.
  • Wheat Chex Cereal: The classic base for any Chex Mix! Wheat Chex adds a hearty, nutty flavor that balances out the other ingredients. You could substitute with Corn Chex or Rice Chex if you prefer, but Wheat Chex really holds up well in the slow cooker, absorbing all the tasty seasonings.
  • Cheerios Cereal: Don’t have Cheerios on hand? You can use another plain cereal like Crispix or even bran flakes, but Cheerios really have that perfect texture for mixing.
  • Salted Peanuts: Peanuts add a savory crunch, and they’re full of protein—making your snack a little heartier. If you’re allergic to peanuts or just not a fan, feel free to swap them with cashews, almonds, or even pumpkin seeds for a nut-free option.
  • Garlic Salt: If you’re out of garlic salt, you can make your own by combining 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder with 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  • Celery Salt: A key player in the seasoning lineup, celery salt adds a subtle, herby note that makes the mix taste, well, fancy! If you don’t have celery salt, you can use regular salt and a pinch of celery seed as a substitute.
  • Seasoned Salt: If you’re all out, you can use a pinch of regular salt with a dash of paprika or even onion powder for that same seasoning kick.
  • Butter: Melted butter helps everything stick together and soak up all the delicious spices. If you want a healthier alternative, you could try using olive oil, but butter gives it that rich, classic taste.
  • Grated Parmesan Cheese: The finishing touch! Parmesan adds a salty, umami-rich flavor that gives the mix a savory, cheesy boost.

These ingredients work together to create the perfect balance of salty, savory, and crunchy. And the best part? You can customize it with your own favorite snacks—add in some rye chips, goldfish crackers, or even a sprinkle of chili powder for a spicy twist.

How to Make Slow Cooker Chex Mix

Here’s how to make this tasty snack with minimal effort—because, really, the slow cooker does all the work for you.

  1. Toss the Good Stuff In: Start by adding your pretzels, Wheat Chex, Cheerios, and salted peanuts into your slow cooker. The mix of these crispy, crunchy ingredients is what makes this Chex Mix so irresistible.
  2. Season It Up: Sprinkle the garlic salt, celery salt, and seasoned salt evenly over the dry mix. Don’t skip this step—these seasonings bring all the savory goodness that will have your guests begging for the recipe.
  3. Butter Makes It Better: Pour the melted butter over everything, stirring gently to coat all the ingredients. Butter helps all the flavors stick together and gives it that satisfying crunch.
  4. Add the Cheese: Toss in the grated Parmesan cheese and stir one more time to make sure it’s all evenly distributed.
  5. Set It and Forget It: Cover your slow cooker and cook on Low for 3-4 hours. Give it a gentle stir halfway through to ensure even heating, but otherwise, just let the slow cooker do its thing. Trust me, it’s worth the wait.
  6. Crisp It Up: In the final 30 minutes of cooking, take off the lid to let the mix crisp up and dry out. This is a crucial step for that perfect crunch—you don’t want to skip it.
  7. Cool and Store: Once the Chex Mix is done, let it cool completely before storing it in an airtight container. This mix stays fresh for up to a week, so it’s perfect for prepping ahead of time for parties, gift bags, or a weekend of family movie nights.

I did not have a good experience with this recipe. I’m not real slow cooker savvy. I followed the timing on it, but still over half of it came out visibly burned. I picked out the worst pieces, but even the ones that looked good still had a burny taste to them. I did not find it any easier than using the oven. I’ll probably just throw this batch out, which is such a waste. If you try this recipe, I recommend you half the time on it, and stir it much more frequently.
