When summer hits, so does the pressure to plan a pricey getaway. But guess what? You don’t have to book a flight or blow your budget to make amazing memories. Here’s the thing: 66% of families worldwide are planning leisure travel this year, but that doesn’t mean you need to hop a plane or take out a loan. In fact, 54% of families say they prefer road trips over flying, and 78% believe that traveling together strengthens their bonds. Translation? Togetherness matters more than the zip code.

Still, the pressure to “do something big” kicks in hard. Social media is a constant highlight reel—people jetting off, checking in, and shelling out. But here’s a little truth bomb: cheap summer trips can be just as rewarding (and way less stressful) than a big-ticket vacation. And considering that 58% of parents find planning family travel stressful, that’s not just a perk—it’s a sanity-saver.

Some of the best memories come from simple, clever outings that leave your budget—and your nerves—intact. Whether you’re wrangling restless kids, craving a couple’s escape, or just itching to do something different this weekend, this list of cheap summer trips is packed with ideas that deliver joy without the financial regret.

Why it works: No lodging, no airport stress, no suitcase required.

Did you know? More than 54% of families say they prefer road trips over flying—and day trips are the easiest version of that because you’re home by bedtime—no hotel shampoo required.

Map out nearby hiking spots, waterfalls, or quirky roadside attractions (yes, the world’s largest ball of twine counts). Visit small towns with charming main streets, mom-and-pop cafés, and thrift shops. Take a self-guided mural or sculpture tour with your phone’s camera and a cold drink in hand.

Bonus tip: Download the GasBuddy app to find the cheapest gas along your route.

Why it works: It feels high-end, but your wallet won’t even notice.

Use your local library card to score free or discounted admission passes.

Extra tip: Check if your local museums participate in the Blue Star Museums program (free for military families during summer).

3. Swap Theme Parks for State Parks

With a little creativity, a good map (or just Google and a decent signal), and the right mindset, cheap summer trips can turn into some of your favorite memories. Whether you’re packing up the kids, rallying a few friends, or simply flying solo with a sense of curiosity, this could be the season you look back on and think, “We really made it count.”

I mentioned to my son that we could always check rates to rent a boat for a day. Son in law can point us in the right direction and we can travel, picnic, swim, fish and enjoy some sun. No time off? Only need 1 day!
