Homemade Wood and Laminate Floor Cleaner

The great thing about alcohol as a cleaning agent is that, like water, it has a nearly neutral ph—neither acidic nor alkaline. And it helps to dry the floor quickly. This makes alcohol the perfect ingredient in your homemade cleaner to clean, protect, and preserve beautifully finished wood and laminate floors.

  • 1 part alcohol: isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, denatured alcohol, gin, or plain vodka
  • 4 parts distilled water
  • a few drops Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid

Instructions

  • Pour all ingredients into a small bucket or container. Mix thoroughly and pour the mixture into your spray bottle of choice or the recycled Swiffer WetJet container using a funnel.

NOTES:
  1. Alcohol is a fantastic cleaning product—rubbing alcohol (70% is most common, but 91% works well, too), denatured alcohol, even gin, or plain vodka. Rubbing alcohol is also a disinfectant, as you know from visiting a doctor’s office or hospital.

    Hi Mary,
I have Bruce laminated wood slats for flooring. I’d been buying their spray on brand to clean my floors and am wondering if this solution would be safe for them. Had I know I wasn’t supposed to wet this type of flooring I never would have agreed to it. So, needless to say, I’ve been super careful to use their stuff. Thanks!

I can’t speak for Bruce flooring manufacturer, however, I would not hesitate to use this DIY formula on any laminate flooring being careful to work in small areas—applying, scrubbing, then wiping dry. The presence of alcohol in the formula is key to helping it dry almost immediately. Hope that helps!
