Homemade Wood Floor Cleaner: Perfect for Laminate Floors, Too!

The great thing about alcohol as a cleaning agent is that, like water, it has a nearly neutral ph, neither acidic nor alkaline. And it helps to dry the floor quickly. This makes alcohol the perfect ingredient in your homemade cleaner to clean, protect, and preserve beautifully finished wood and laminate floors.

Equipment

  • A spray bottle or spray mop
  • A mop or sponge
  • A clean, dry towel

Ingredients

  • 1 part alcohol (isopropyl, denatured, plain vodka, or gin)
  • 4 parts distilled water
  • a few drops Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid

Instructions

Mix Your Own Cleaner

  • In a spray bottle or the reservoir of a spray mop, combine 1 part alcohol, 4 parts distilled water, and a few drops of Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid.

How to Use Your Homemade Wood Cleaner

  • Dust, sweep, or vacuum your laminate floors to remove loose dirt and debris.
  • Fill your spray bottle or spray mop reservoir with the cleaning solution. Spray small sections of the floor and gently scrub. Alternatively, dip a mop or sponge into the solution, then wring out excess liquid. Avoid oversaturating the laminate to prevent warping.
  • Use a clean, dry towel to blot up any excess moisture and buff the floor dry. This step helps prevent streaks and water spots, keeping your laminate looking pristine.

Notes

NOTES:
  1. Alcohol is a fantastic cleaning product—rubbing alcohol (70% is most common, but 91% works well, too), denatured alcohol, even gin, or plain vodka. Rubbing alcohol is also a disinfectant, as you know from visiting a doctor’s office or hospital.

  3. For stubborn stains or ground-in dirt, use a mild abrasive cleaner. Always test a small, hidden area first to ensure the cleaner won’t damage your laminate.
