40-Day Christmas Challenge | Day 17: Create One Holiday Command Center

November 1, 2025/Updated October 22, 2026/0 Comments/in Christmas Challenge /by Mary Hunt

Desk organized as a Christmas command center with receipts, notebook and filing box

Christmas has started leaving things all over the house.

There’s the gift list on your phone. A receipt in your purse. An order confirmation in your email. A reservation number in a text. A note on the kitchen counter reminding you of something you’re quite certain you’ll remember.

You will not remember. Or perhaps I should speak for myself.

At some point, all these perfectly useful bits of information become useless if you can’t find them when you need them.

So today we’re giving Christmas one home.

Not a beautiful Christmas organization system. Not another app to learn. Just one place to look.

Today’s Challenge

Create one home base for the Christmas information you’re going to need again. It can be paper. Digital. Or a simple combination of both.

Use what you already have and what you’re actually likely to check. Fancy is not required. Findable is required.

Do This Today

1. Choose your home base.

For paper, that might be:

  • a folder
  • a large envelope
  • a binder pocket
  • a basket or tray

For digital information, it might be:

  • an email folder or label
  • a folder on your computer
  • one note on your phone
  • a temporary photo album for Christmas screenshots and receipts

You don’t need all of these. Choose the smallest setup that works for you.

And please don’t spend the afternoon researching Christmas organization apps. We are organizing Christmas. Not developing software for the North Pole.

2. Gather what’s already wandering around.

Spend a few minutes collecting Christmas information you’ve already created or received. Your gift list. Receipts you don’t want to lose. Useful confirmations. Addresses. Reservation details. Tickets. Notes you’ve made to yourself.

Anything currently living in a random pocket, inbox, text thread or kitchen-counter pile because you thought:

I’ll remember where I put this.

We both know how this ends.

Put it in your Christmas home base. For digital information, that may simply mean moving an email into your Christmas folder or adding the important detail to your Christmas note.

3. Put important details where you’ll actually see them.

A folder is good at holding information. It is not particularly good at reminding you to do something.

If a Christmas detail requires action on a certain day, put that action on your calendar. Reservation at 6:30? Calendar. Something needs to be mailed? Calendar. A deadline you can’t afford to miss? Calendar.

Your command center is where the information lives. Your calendar is where time-sensitive things get your attention.

Quick Win

Grab an envelope.

Write: CHRISTMAS on the front.

Put the Christmas receipts and notes you can find inside.

Done.

You now have a holiday command center. It is not particularly glamorous. It works.

Your Inbox Is Not a Filing System

Technically, yes, that confirmation email is probably still in there. Somewhere. Along with thousands of other messages and six emails with subject lines containing the word ORDER.

If you do much of your Christmas business online, create one email folder or label for Christmas and move useful confirmations there.

Take a Picture of Important Paper Receipts

Paper receipts have an impressive ability to disappear precisely when you need one.

If a receipt matters, snap a photo before putting the paper copy in your Christmas folder or envelope. If you don’t want receipt photos mixed in with everything else, put them in a temporary album on your phone. Delete it when you’re done with returns.

Picture. Folder. Done.

Why It Matters

Organization isn’t useful because everything looks tidy. It’s useful because it keeps you from solving the same problem twice.

You already received the confirmation. You already wrote down the address. You already had the receipt in your hand.

Future You should not have to go looking for all of it again. Ten minutes today can prevent an astonishing amount of Where did I put that? later.

Your Turn

Where does important Christmas information usually end up at your house? Purse? Junk drawer? Kitchen counter? Still inside the shopping bag? Tell us in the comments. I’ve definitely put things somewhere “safe” only to discover that apparently even I don’t know where safe is.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow we’re deciding which holiday classics are actually worth making time for. The movies, music, books and little seasonal favorites you genuinely enjoy.

Not a Christmas bucket list.

Just the ones you’d be sorry to realize you never got around to.
