40-Day Christmas Challenge | Day 37: Finish What You Started

November 1, 2025/Updated September 28, 2026/0 Comments/in Christmas Challenge /by Mary Hunt

Woman finishing up wrapping a final Christmas present

We’re close enough to Christmas that unfinished things can start making an awful lot of noise.

The gift that still needs wrapping. The package that hasn’t been picked up. The card you meant to send. The ingredient you forgot. The homemade something-or-other sitting there at 80% finished, silently judging you.

Some of those things genuinely need to get done. Somebody else could do some of them. And some have been hanging around so long that perhaps it’s time to admit they no longer deserve a place in this Christmas.

That’s what we’re sorting out today.

Today’s Challenge

Find the Christmas loose ends that are still hanging around and make one decision about each:

  • FINISH IT.
  • HAND IT OFF.
  • DROP IT.

That’s the whole system. No fourth category called Continue Feeling Guilty About It.

Do This Today

1. Find what’s actually unfinished.

Give yourself 10 or 15 minutes and look across Christmas.

Not from memory. That’s how we end up with a swirling cloud of There’s something I’m forgetting.

Look at the things you’ve already been using: your calendar, Master Giving List, meal plan, orders and receipts, Christmas budget and whatever you’ve been using to keep track of the rest.

What’s still open?

A gift needs wrapping. Something needs batteries or assembly. A package needs picking up. A card needs mailing. An order hasn’t arrived. A dinner ingredient is missing. A homemade gift needs one last step. A guest detail hasn’t been confirmed.

Don’t make a beautiful new list. Just find the loose ends.

2. Decide who or what finishes each one.

For every unfinished thing, choose:

  • FINISH IT: It matters, and you’re going to do it.
  • HAND IT OFF: It matters, but there is no reason you personally need to do it.
  • DROP IT: It no longer matters enough to spend your time, money or energy on it.

Be willing to change the original plan.

The dessert can be purchased. The gift can go into a bag instead of becoming a wrapping-paper masterpiece. Someone else can make the pickup. The second batch of cookies can quietly cease to exist.

The goal isn’t to preserve the plan. The goal is to finish the Christmas that still matters.

3. Do the shortest important thing first.

Look at what landed in FINISH IT.

Which important task can you complete quickly? Do that one now.

Send the text. Make the call. Wrap the gift. Confirm the plan. Pick up the order. Put the missing ingredient on the grocery list.

Finish the thing that’s been taking up considerably more mental space than actual time.

Then move to the next one.

Quick Win

Find one unfinished Christmas task that takes less than five minutes.

Do it now. Then cross it off.

There. Doesn’t that feel disproportionately good?

Not Everything You Started Deserves Finishing

This is important. Finishing what you started does not mean resurrecting every idea you’ve had since October.

Maybe you bought supplies for a Christmas craft you never started. Planned another batch of cookies nobody is asking for. Intended to decorate one more room. Saved a recipe that now requires three ingredients you don’t have.

You are allowed to look at something and say: We don’t need this anymore.

That’s not quitting. That’s editing.

Be Suspicious of Tasks That Keep Creating Tasks

You know these. One little thing requires three more things before it can happen.

I’ll make that special dessert.

Which requires a specialty ingredient. Which requires another store. Which reminds you that you need something to serve it on. And somehow you’re standing in a checkout line holding decorative napkins.

No. At this stage of Christmas, a task should be moving toward completion. If it keeps producing offspring, simplify it or drop it.

Handing It Off Counts

There are Christmas jobs that need to happen. There are far fewer Christmas jobs that need to be done specifically by you.

Someone else can wrap. Pick up the order. Make the grocery run. Put batteries in the toys. Vacuum the living room. Bring dessert. Make the phone call.

If another capable person can finish something, give them the whole job. Not “help me with this.” Would you please handle this? Then let them.

Don’t Add Anything New Today

While we’re finishing Christmas, we’re not expanding Christmas.

No new projects. No new traditions. No additional gift browsing. No deciding the mantel suddenly needs something. No recipe you just saw online that would be “so cute.”

We’re landing the plane now. This is not the time to begin construction on another runway.

Why It Matters

Unfinished things are noisy. Even tiny ones. They sit in the back of our minds reminding us: Don’t forget me. Don’t forget me. Don’t forget me.

Today we’re quieting some of that noise. Some things get finished. Some get handed off. Some get crossed off because we’ve finally admitted they don’t matter enough anymore. All three count.

Because the goal isn’t to arrive at Christmas with every possible thing completed. It’s to arrive with the important things cared for and enough of yourself left to enjoy them.

Your Turn

What’s one Christmas thing you finally stopped doing because it wasn’t worth the effort anymore? And did anybody actually miss it? Tell us in the comments. I have a feeling the answer to that second question is going to be interesting.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow we’re doing something that may be harder than finishing: stopping.

There will always be one more thing you could buy, bake, decorate, improve or squeeze in.

Day 38 is about recognizing when Christmas is enough. And then leaving it alone.
