Everyday Cheapskate - Christmas Challenge 2025 - Day 20

40-Day Christmas Challenge | Day 20 • Forgotten Gift Cards

Everyday Cheapskate - Christmas Challenge 2025 - Day 20

Today’s challenge is a treasure hunt… not for gold, but for something just as valuable: forgotten gift cards. We’ve all been there, rifling through drawers or bags only to stumble on a card with just a few dollars left and wonder, “What now?” Let’s rescue those hidden treasures and put them to good use this holiday season.

Day 20: Forgotten Gift Cards

Start by gathering every gift card hiding in drawers, wallets, coat pockets… anything you can find. Check the balances (most cards have a number to call or a website listed) and see how you can use them: holiday gifts, everyday purchases, or maybe that fancy coffee you’ve been eyeing.

If a card doesn’t spark joy, or you’re unlikely to use it, don’t shove it back into the abyss. Trade it online for one you’ll actually use or sell it for cash through platforms like Raise or CardCash. Even tiny balances on prepaid cards can add up: a few cents here or there can boost your Amazon account or cover a small treat, proving that every little bit counts toward holiday savings.

Action Step

  • Gather all gift cards and prepaid debit cards from your home.
  • Check the balances by calling the number or visiting the website on the back.
  • Sort them into two categories: “usable” and “not usable.”
  • Use the “usable” cards for holiday shopping or gifts.
  • For “not usable” cards, trade them for ones you’ll actually use or sell them online.
  • Add leftover balances from prepaid cards to your Amazon account or other favorite retailer.

Resource: Raise.com lets you sell unwanted gift cards or buy discounted ones. Always double-check expiration dates and potential fees before making a trade.

Why It Matters

Gift cards are cash in disguise. Don’t let them sit forgotten. Collecting and repurposing them saves money, reduces holiday stress, and makes use of resources that might otherwise go to waste. Plus, it’s a simple way to stretch your budget while still making the season feel abundant.
