40-Day Christmas Challenge | Day 4 • Budget Your Holiday Joy
The holidays bring joy, laughter… and let’s be honest, a few too many expenses.
If you’ve ever found yourself swiping the credit card “just this once” or feeling that January financial hangover, today’s challenge is for you. We’re putting a plan in place so you can enjoy the season fully, without the post-holiday regret.
Day 4: Budget Your Holiday Joy
Here’s the truth: the holidays can get pricey fast. Sure, gifts take center stage, but the extras… baking supplies, decorations, travel, cards, concerts, and last-minute “oh, I forgot!” items sneak up before you know it. Without a plan, it’s easy to lose track and overspend.
So today, we’re getting real with our money. Grab a pencil (or open your favorite budgeting app) and jot down the total amount you have available for the entire holiday season. Then ask: Where’s that money coming from and how will I divide it up?
Action Step
- List everything you typically spend on during the holidays: gifts, food, décor, travel, cards, outings, and so on.
- Decide on your total spending limit… what you can actually afford, not what feels ideal.
- Divide that total into categories by priority.
- Adjust as needed until everything fits within your limit. (Yes, this might take a little erasing or a few spreadsheet tweaks!)
If your total feels bigger than expected, you’re not alone. The goal here isn’t to feel deprived. It’s to stay in control. Start trimming where you can. Maybe that means swapping a pricey gift for a handwritten note or a framed family photo. Thoughtfulness doesn’t cost extra.
Still over budget? Get creative. Consider a gift exchange, set spending caps, or explore second-hand treasures. You can also earn a little extra by selling unused items online or offering your time or skills in place of gifts.
Whether you prefer tracking in a simple spreadsheet, using a free app, or keeping it old-school with pen and paper, the goal is the same: make your money work for you, not the other way around.

Why It Matters
A clear, realistic spending plan gives you freedom, the kind that lets you enjoy the season without financial stress tagging along. When you budget with purpose, you get to focus on what truly matters: the laughter, the traditions, and the people you love most.
Because Christmas memories shouldn’t come with a credit card bill attached.
