Cake lovers, rejoice! So you’re not a pie fan? No problem. This cranapple dump cake is the perfect way to wrap up your Thanksgiving feast (or any fall dinner). This dump cake is easy, fast, scrumdiddlyumptious!

Some flavors just feel like the season, don’t they? When the air turns crisp and sweaters make their debut, apple and cranberry step in as fall’s perfect pair: sweet, tart, and full of cozy spice.

Here’s what I love about this recipe: Sweet apples, tart cranberries, a buttery crumbly topping that tastes like you’ve been baking all day. It’s comfort food, pure and simple. You can practically smell the cinnamon and nutmeg before it even hits the oven.

What You’ll Need to Make This Festive Dessert

This cranapple dump cake is all about simple ingredients that come together to taste like you’ve been baking all day. Here’s what makes it work:

  • Apple Pie Filling: Go with your favorite brand, or use a homemade version if you’ve got a stash. For a lighter option, try no-sugar-added filling.
  • Whole Berry Cranberry Sauce: This adds a pop of color and tartness that balances the sweet apples. Avoid jellied cranberry sauce. It doesn’t hold up as well in baking. If you’re out, you can use frozen cranberries tossed with a bit of sugar and cornstarch as a backup.
  • Chopped Pecans or Walnuts (Optional): Totally optional, but that bit of crunch gives the dessert texture and a toasty flavor that complements the fruit. If you’re nut-free, skip them or use toasted oats or sunflower seeds for a similar effect.
  • Yellow Cake Mix (or Spice Cake Mix): Yellow cake mix gives this dessert a buttery, classic flavor, while spice cake mix adds warmth and depth. Either way, it’s your shortcut to that perfect crumble topping. Gluten-free cake mix works beautifully here, too!
  • Melted Butter: Butter binds the cake mix into a golden, crumbly topping. If you’re dairy-free, use melted coconut oil or a high-quality vegan butter substitute. Both will still deliver that rich, crisp texture.
  • Cinnamon + Nutmeg: These cozy spices bring out the best in the fruit. Feel free to adjust to taste or add a pinch of cloves for extra warmth.
  • Vanilla Extract: A splash of vanilla ties everything together and gives the fruit filling that homemade bakery scent.
  • Salt: Just a pinch keeps things from tasting overly sweet and enhances every other flavor in the pan.
  • Vanilla Ice Cream or Whipped Cream, for Serving: Don’t skip the topping! A scoop of vanilla ice cream melting into a warm serving of this cake is pure comfort. Whipped cream works beautifully, too, especially with a sprinkle of cinnamon on top.

How to Make Cranapple Dump Cake Step-by-Step

The beauty of this dessert is in its simplicity. Here’s how to make it come together effortlessly (and beautifully):

1. Prep your pan

Start by preheating your oven to 350°F and lightly buttering a 9×13-inch baking dish. This helps keep the edges from sticking and adds a touch of flavor to that golden crust. If you’re dairy-free, a quick spritz of nonstick spray works just as well.

2. Mix the filling right in the pan

Skip the mixing bowl. Stir together your apple pie filling, cranberry sauce, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and a pinch of salt right in the baking dish. You’ll see the red and gold swirl together into something that already looks festive.

3. Add the cake layer

Sprinkle the dry cake mix evenly over the fruit mixture. Don’t stir. The cake mix will absorb moisture from the filling as it bakes, forming that buttery, crumbly topping we love.

4. Butter makes it beautiful

Drizzle melted butter evenly across the top. To make sure every bit of mix gets covered, use the back of a spoon to spread it around gently. Dry spots lead to powdery patches instead of golden crunch, so take a few extra seconds here. Tt’s worth it.

5. Add the crunch

Sprinkle chopped nuts over the top for that irresistible toasty finish. They’ll brown beautifully in the oven and add texture that makes each bite pop.

6. Bake to perfection

Slide your dish into the oven, uncovered, and bake for 50–55 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when the top is golden brown and the edges are bubbling like a little cranberry lava.

7. Serve it up warm

Let it cool for 10 minutes. Then, scoop generous portions while it’s still warm, and top with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. That cold, creamy contrast against the warm fruit filling is pure comfort in a bowl.

I made a similar dessert last year during the Christmas season using pineapple filling and homemade whole berry cranberry sauce left from Thanksgiving. (I love the combination of cranberry and pineapple.) I always just combine softened butter with a box of cake mix to make a crumble topping when making dump cakes like this. (I pulse together in a food processor.) Scatter the crumble mixture evenly over the top, add nuts if desired and bake as usual. No worries about dry patches.
I will definitely give the CranApple Crunch a try, with my crumble style topping.
