Beat the Heat: Budget-Friendly Frozen Desserts for Summer

May 14, 2024/2 Comments/in DIY, Food and Recipes /by Mary Hunt
Frozen Summer Treats are Cool

As temperatures soar, stay cool without emptying your wallet with these delightful homemade frozen desserts! From refreshing slushies to creamy milkshakes, beat the summer heat affordably with these easy recipes.

assorted frozen dessert slushies strawberry pineapple blueberry

With the sizzling days of summer upon us, it’s tempting to load up the freezer with pricey frozen desserts and treats. Or to duck into a coffee shop or juice bar to grab one of those decadent blended coffee chillers. Or a fruit smoothie. But the big price tags can make even the creamiest concoction or slushiest treat hard to swallow.

Thankfully, giving up your favorite summer treats isn’t your only option. With these simple frozen dessert recipes using ordinary ingredients—and lots of ice!— you can have great summertime frozen desserts at home for just quarters, not dollars.

Easy Strawberry Lime Slush

strawberry limeade

Get ready to be wowed by this Easy Strawberry Lime Slush! With just a handful of ingredients, you can whip up a refreshing drink that’s perfect for cooling down on a hot summer day. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 12 frozen strawberries
  • 1 cup lemon-lime soda, like Sprite
  • 2 tbsp freshly squeezed lime juice (about two limes)
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 3 large ice cubes

Simply toss the strawberries, soda, lime juice, and sugar into your blender and blend until smooth. Then, add in the ice cubes and blend again until you reach your desired slushy consistency. Trust me, the result is pure refreshment! This recipe makes enough for one large drink or two medium-sized ones. And for an extra fancy touch, rim your glasses with sugar or salt and garnish with a sprig of fresh basil. Cheers to staying cool in style!

Copycat Wendy’s Chocolate Frosty

copycat wendy's chocolate frosty nestle nesquick in measuring cup

Get ready to indulge in a Copycat Wendy’s Chocolate Frosty that’s even better than the original! Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 3 cups vanilla ice cream
  • 1 cup milk (low-fat is A-okay)
  • 1/2 cup Nestle’s Nesquik Chocolate Flavored Powder

Start by letting your ice cream soften in the refrigerator for about an hour. Then, toss it into the blender along with the milk and Nesquik powder. Give it a whirl until everything is smooth and creamy.

Now, here’s where you can take it up a notch! Just like at Wendy’s, feel free to get creative with your toppings. Whether you’re a fan of sprinkles, crumbled cookies, whipped cream, or any other tasty treat, go ahead and pile them on. After all, this frosty frozen dessert treat is all about indulgence!

This recipe makes enough to share, yielding four servings of pure chocolatey bliss.

Whipped Frozen Lemonade

whipped lemonade

Be transported to lemonade paradise with this Whipped Frozen Lemonade recipe. It’s a delightful blend of creamy and tangy flavors that will leave you feeling refreshed and satisfied. Plus, you only need four simple ingredients and a blender to whip it up.

First, let’s make the Lemon Simple Syrup:

  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Zest of 1 lemon

In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine the sugar and water. Stir until the sugar dissolves, then add in the lemon zest. Remove from heat, cover, and let it steep for about an hour. Once it’s ready, strain the syrup through a fine-mesh sieve, discarding the zest. You’ll have some extra syrup, which you can store in the refrigerator for up to a week.

Now, onto the main event:

  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (from about 2 lemons)
  • 1 cup full-fat coconut milk*
  • 2 1/2 cups ice cubes

*Feel free to use light coconut milk as a substitute, although it won’t be as rich and creamy.

In your blender, combine 1/2 cup of the simple syrup, lemon juice, coconut milk, and ice cubes. Blend until the ice is crushed and the mixture turns into a slushy delight. Then, divide it between four 8-ounce glasses and serve immediately.

Get ready to savor every sip of this whipped frozen lemonade—it’s like a creamy milkshake and tangy lemonade all in one!

Banana Berry Freeze

This Banana Berry Freeze recipe is sure to become a favorite in your kitchen! It’s a delightful blend of fruity flavors with a creamy twist, perfect for treating yourself on any occasion. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 2 cups of ice
  • 1 ripe banana, peeled
  • 3/4 cup Strawberry Daiquiri mix
  • 1/4 cup Pina Colada mix
  • Whipped cream for garnish

Now, let’s whip it up. Place all of the ingredients, except for the whipped cream, into your blender. Then, blend everything on high speed for about 10-15 seconds until you achieve a smooth and creamy consistency.

Once your Banana Berry Freeze is perfectly blended, it’s time to serve it up. Pour the mixture into two elegant wine glasses, leaving just enough room for a generous dollop of whipped cream on top. For the finishing touch, garnish each glass with a swirl of whipped cream.

Berry Banana Smoothies

Blend up some deliciousness with these Berry Banana Smoothies. Packed with fruity goodness and creamy yogurt, they’re the perfect way to start your day or refuel after a workout. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 cup reduced-fat vanilla yogurt
  • 1 medium ripe banana, peeled, cut into chunks, and frozen
  • 1/4 cup each frozen unsweetened strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and or blackberries
  • 1 cup fat-free milk

Grab your blender or food processor and add in all of the ingredients. That’s right—just toss everything in there! Cover up your blender and let it work its magic. Blend everything until it’s nice and smooth, with no chunks left behind.

Once your smoothie mixture is blended, pour it into chilled glasses. This not only keeps your smoothie cool but also adds a touch of class to your presentation. With this recipe, you’ll have enough to treat yourself and a couple of friends, making it perfect for sharing or savoring all to yourself.

Copycat Starbucks Frappuccino

Iced frappochino coffee in a tall glass with syrup and whipped cream

Get ready to bring the irresistible taste of Starbucks right to your own kitchen with this Copycat Starbucks Frappuccino recipe. It’s a deliciously creamy and indulgent treat that’s perfect for satisfying your coffee cravings any time of day. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 3 ounces hot espresso (or super strong coffee)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/2 cups milk (low-fat works just fine)
  • 1 tbps dry pectin*
  • 1 cup ice
  • Whipped cream (optional)

*Dry pectin can often be found on the baking aisle as its commonly used to thicken jams and jellies. Alternatively, it may be found online.

Now, let’s get brewing. If you don’t have an espresso maker, don’t worry! You can still make this Frappuccino by brewing some double-strength coffee. Just double the amount of coffee grounds you would normally use. Once your coffee is ready, stir in the sugar and allow it to cool down to room temperature.

Once your coffee mixture is nice and cool, it’s time to add in the milk and dry pectin. Stir everything together until the pectin is fully dissolved.

Now, you have a choice: you can either fill a glass with ice and pour the mixture over the top, or you can blend everything together in a blender with the ice for an extra chilly and frothy texture.

Top off your Copycat Starbucks Frappuccino with a dollop of whipped cream and your favorite garnish, whether it’s a sprinkle of cinnamon or chocolate shavings.

With this recipe, you’ll have enough to treat yourself and a few lucky friends to the delightful taste of Starbucks right at home.

  • 1 (6-ounce) can frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed
  • 4 bananas, sliced

The berry banana smoothies are the best. Another option is homemade popsicles: dissolve one 3 oz. package strawberry gelatin, one package of unsweetened strawberry (or lemon) Kool-aid mix, and 3/4 cup of sugar. Add two cups of cold water and mix well. Pour into popsicle molds and freeze overnight.
