Everyday Cheapskate - Christmas Challenge 2025 - Day 8

Ah, baking season… the time of year when even the most “I-don’t-bake” among us suddenly feel inspired to pull out the mixing bowls. There’s just something about the smell of cinnamon and butter that makes a home feel cozy and complete. But nothing kills the mood faster than realizing you’re out of sugar mid-recipe or discovering that your baking powder expired in 2019.

Let’s fix that before it happens. A little planning now means you can bake (and taste-test) your way through the holidays with ease, not chaos.

Day 8: Holiday Baking Prep

The holidays have a way of turning casual bakers into cookie connoisseurs and fudge enthusiasts. Whether you’re dusting off Grandma’s fruitcake recipe or trying something new from your favorite food blog, today’s challenge is about setting yourself up for stress-free success.

Action Step

  • Pick your recipes. Choose your must-bakes: cookies, breads, fudge, or that one treat your family begs for every year.
  • Take stock. Check your pantry for staples like flour, sugar, and spices. Make note of what’s low or missing.
  • Make your list. Jot down what you’ll need, and start watching for grocery sales or bulk discounts on baking essentials.
  • Plan your bake days. Block off one or two days on your calendar dedicated to baking. Treat them like appointments with flour instead of paperwork.

Sweet Homemade Gifts Made Simple

Few things say “I care” like something made in your own kitchen. If you love gifting from the heart, consider whipping up easy, crowd-pleasing treats like toffee, spiced nuts, or classic holiday fudge. Add a personal touch with pretty packaging. Think small jars, tins, or recycled boxes wrapped with ribbon and a handwritten tag.

Whether it’s for neighbors, teachers, or your best friend with a sweet tooth, homemade goodies are thoughtful, affordable, and full of charm.

Why It Matters

Holiday baking should feel joyful, not like a culinary endurance test. By prepping now, you’ll save time, money, and sanity when things get busy. Plus, you’ll be ready to enjoy those slow, memory-making moments, like licking the spoon or stealing a cookie while they’re still warm.

Every year I do the following: Both a sweet and savory Chex mix (I’m going to try Mary’s crock pot recipe this year), decorated sugar cookies, chocolate chip pb cup cookies, and some pretzel/caramel concoction, then whatever else I feel in the mood to make. There is always plenty of these to give as gifts to friends and family.
