Everyday Cheapskate - Christmas Challenge 2025 - Day 27

40-Day Christmas Challenge | Day 27 • Mail It with Care

Everyday Cheapskate - Christmas Challenge 2025 - Day 27

Ever scrambled to pack a holiday gift only to realize you’re out of bubble wrap, or worse, paid more for shipping than the gift itself? Today, we’ll take stock of our mailing supplies and explore smart, eco-friendly packing solutions. You’ll save time, reduce stress, and maybe even get a little crafty along the way.

Day 27: Mail It with Care

This challenge is all about preparing gifts for shipping with care and creativity. By using what you already have and thinking outside the box, you’ll avoid last-minute store runs, expensive packing materials, and surprise shipping disasters. With a little planning, every gift can arrive safely and with an extra personal touch.

Action Step

  • Gather what you have: tape, scissors, labels, packing materials (newspaper, shredded paper, fabric scraps), and sturdy boxes.
  • Replace bubble wrap or Styrofoam with eco-friendly alternatives like air-popped popcorn (unsalted, butter-free) or fabric scraps.
  • Line and cushion gifts with brown paper bags or leftover wrapping paper.
  • Make addresses clear and legible; include your return address both inside and outside the box.
  • Use filament-reinforced tape to prevent snags or splits during shipping.

Holiday Packing Tips & Hacks

  1. Use dry, air-popped popcorn as packing material and include a note instructing the recipients to keep the gift and give the popcorn to the birds.
  2. Shred newspaper or save paper shreddings to replace bubble wrap and Styrofoam.
  3. Cut empty wrapping paper tubes to fit inside boxes for lightweight cushioning.
  4. Repurpose brown paper bags into custom-sized mailers with heavy tape for a snug fit.
  5. Avoid shoe boxes for mailing, as they tend to split under pressure.
  6. Spritz Styrofoam packing peanuts with antistatic spray to prevent mess and static cling.
  7. Ensure address labels are legible from 30 inches away—about an arm’s length.
  8. Mark fragile packages in three places: above the address, below the postage, and on the back.
  9. Use filament-reinforced tape to seal packages securely, avoiding twine or string.
  10. Save wrapping paper, ribbon, and packing materials from this year to reuse next year.
  11. Enclose a note inside the box with both the recipient’s and your return address.
  12. Add a festive touch with pine-scented potpourri before sealing the package.
  13. Use a waterproof marker if writing the address directly on the box.
  14. Mail packages early to avoid costly expedited shipping fees.

Why It Matters

By preparing ahead and using sustainable materials, you’ll save money, reduce waste, and make every gift feel thoughtful. Your recipients will notice the effort, whether it’s a clever popcorn padding, a sprinkle of holiday scent, or simply a package that arrives intact.
