Everyday Cheapskate - Christmas Challenge 2025 - Day 25

There’s something magical about counting down to Christmas, isn’t there? The anticipation, the sparkle, the cozy evenings filled with stories and laughter. It all builds toward that joyful day. One of my favorite ways to make those final days extra special is with a 12-Day Christmas Countdown that’s simple, meaningful, and budget-friendly.

Picture this: a stack of beautifully wrapped books by the fireplace, little hands reaching for one each night, and stories that carry your family into snowy wonderlands, nativity scenes, or Santa’s bustling workshop. It’s a tradition that slows the season down and turns ordinary evenings into something to look forward to.

Day 25: 12-Day Christmas Countdown

Here’s how it works: wrap up 12 children’s books, one for each day leading up to Christmas, and let your kids unwrap a new story every evening. It’s a small idea with big rewards: excitement, connection, and a nightly reminder of what the season’s really about.

Your books don’t have to be new or fancy. You can mix holiday classics, family favorites, or even borrow from the library. The joy comes from the ritual, not the price tag.

Plan to start your first unwrapping on Friday, December 13th.

Action Step

  • Choose 12 books: a mix of Christmas stories, children’s favorites, or family classics. Borrow, swap, or shop secondhand if needed.
  • Use wrapping paper, brown craft paper, or even newspaper with ribbon. Label them 1–12.
  • Arrange them in a basket, on a shelf, or under the tree.
  • Each evening, open one together and savor the story.

This idea works beautifully beyond your own family, too. Grandparents, teachers, and Sunday school leaders can easily adapt it. And if you don’t have little ones at home, consider assembling a set for a family in need or a local children’s shelter. It’s a heartfelt way to spread the joy.

Short on books? Check your local library or thrift shops, or look online for gently used titles at places like ThriftBooks or BetterWorldBooks.
