A window in a dark room

Best Inexpensive Home Security System

Several months ago, we had a serious home security wake-up call with the news of a home invasion in our sleepy town, population fewer than 20,000.

A window in a dark room

In the middle of the night, two young, hoodied thugs went from house to house in a beautiful new development until they found an unlocked window. Once inside, they held the terrified homeowners at gunpoint. Eventually, the perpetrators were caught and charged with 7 counts including kidnapping, grand larceny, and attempted murder (what a story, trust me).

I cannot recall a time I was more grateful to have a robust home security system. Thankfully, our neighbors survived, but the trauma of the event together with the tremendous financial loss will be with them indefinitely.

According to crime statistics from the FBI, a burglary happens once every 23 seconds in the U.S. When you add it up, that’s 3,757 burglaries a day! Mind-boggling.

While it’s impossible to put a price on the value of protecting your home and family, there is an inexpensive yet highly effective way to create a strong defense against intruders. That means a solid home security system.

Having considered, studied, and evaluated home security systems, I’m convinced that we can do this well using the latest technology available, but without spending a fortune.

    Hi Mary,
It looks like the monitoring cost is more than $14.99/month. Their site shows $.83/day which works out to $24.90 for 30 days.

I have 3 (non violent but loud) huge pit bulls. They are sweet as pie until somebody is outside that they don’t know. Then they are loud and sound ferrous but once we let the person in and we seem ok with them they wag their tail and want to be petted but if you don’t know them they are scary. Works every time. I even put a ferrous dog sign outside to deter thieves. Never had a problem yet in our 20 years living here. They are so gentle it is amazing. The only thing that has ever happened is that one of the dogs didn’t want my grand baby to get on her electric jeep. The dog kept pulling on her pants cause she didn’t want her to get on the jeep. No harm just scared her. I guess the dog was trying to protect her from the jeep. So funny.

My husband and I have had Simply safe for a few years now. I can tell you, it has saved our bacon quite a few times. We also have the water sensor. Our basement has had issues with busted pipes, humidifier water leaks, washer drain leaks. Simply Safe has saved us EVERY time. We also like the panic button. My husband is disabled and has used it a few times while I was working to call for medical help. I am also not technologically inclined, but I installed it completely all by myself. A call to Simply Safe can walk you through the whole process. I wouldn’t be without it.

I have had two SimpliSafe systems. I ordered my first larger one direct from the company, my second smaller one for my condo was better priced on Amazon. Even though I am neither “tech literate” nor “handy”, this DIY was “simple and safe”- I installed both units by myself. I remain very pleased with it. I really appreciate that no contracts are required and that I am able to choose the best level of monitoring to meet my need.

I live in the country so have a lot of mice in cellar. the motion detection is so good that the mice can trigger it. carefully placing the detectors solved the problem . excellent system.

I evaluated Simplisafe, but decided to go with Ring because it’s services seem very similar to Simplisafe, but it is easy to pay the monthly fee only for the times you expect to be gone a lot, and not pay it when you are going to be home alot.

When you don’t pay the fee, the alerts go to your phone, not to the central office.

In my case, I’m home 98% of the time, so I only pay the $10 fee if I’m going to be out of town for more than an evening.

For some senior citizens, the Ring system might be better, and is DEFINITELY less expensive in the long run.

I read your column every day, Mary! You’re the best source of reliable info on so many things. And once again, you’ve hit the mark. We’ve had Simplisafe for over a year. We installed it ourselves, customized it as we likes, and have never had a problem using it. We did have to get an alarm permit from our Village and register our system with them, but its no big deal. I highly recommend SimpliSafe, too!

We had ours about 3 years and we love it. So simple to use, and when we accidentally did not enter code they did call. They do monitor and check on you. We also have a private code to put in if we are under durest for the code.
