If your grocery bill feels more like a mortgage payment these days, you’re not imagining it. Even though inflation’s been slowing, grocery prices have climbed about 21% over the past few years. While groceries are non-negotiable, your strategy for shopping doesn’t have to be. You can outsmart rising costs with the help of meal planning and grocery apps.

Ah, the glory days of paper coupons! Back then, we were all about the hunt-clip-sort routine, saving those precious cents wherever possible. Now retired, Teri Gault and “The Grocery Game” were game-changers, helping us save 30% or more every week. But things have gone digital now—no more Sunday papers, just apps and in-store scanning. While it’s more streamlined, it can feel like you’re playing a game of high-tech hide-and-seek.

Don’t worry, though, because Kiersten Torok is a new coupon queen on the scene. She started couponing in high school after her parents lost their jobs in 2008, and when the pandemic hit, she doubled down on her skills. Now, she’s sharing her secrets on social media, making paperless couponing accessible to everyone. Check out her tips at Torok Coupon Hunter to start saving like a pro.

Remember the Coupons: Unlock Savings Grocery Apps

Now that couponing has gone digital, it is actually easier and faster than ever. Apps like Flipp and Coupons.com have made paperless couponing a breeze, allowing you to browse deals at your favorite stores in real time.

Flipp consolidates weekly ads from your local grocery stores, and with a few taps, you can virtually “clip” coupons to use at checkout. The app also lets you price match, so you always get the best deal. These tools are the secret weapon for saving money with minimal effort. No more hiding coupons in your purse—everything you need is on your phone!

Cash In with Grocery Apps: Best Cash Back Picks

Ibotta is a star in the grocery app world, offering cash back on everything from pantry staples to produce. It’s as simple as scanning your receipt after shopping or linking your loyalty card, and voila—cash is yours. Fetch Rewards is another fan-favorite where every grocery purchase earns you points you can turn into gift cards. These apps can take the sting out of those grocery prices, rewarding you for simply buying the essentials.

Other apps like Rakuten and Dosh give you cashback on purchases when shopping online. They automatically apply discounts or rebates while you’re checking out, ensuring you don’t miss out on any savings. And the best part? These apps are free, easy to use, and turn everyday shopping into an opportunity to save—even on things you’re already buying.

Budget Like a Boss: Best Budgeting Apps

One of the best ways to control your grocery spending is to make a budget—and stick to it. Start by taking a good look at what you’re currently spending. Those crumpled receipts? They’re gold mines of information. If you don’t have them, your bank statements will do. Add up your average spending and set a goal, whether it’s to shave off $20 a week or just to avoid hitting triple digits every time.

But if the thought of spreadsheets makes you cringe, don’t worry—budgeting apps make it effortless. YNAB (You Need A Budget) is a standout app for anyone serious about cutting down on grocery costs. It helps you track every penny and stick to the budget you set. This app encourages mindful shopping and meal planning, helping you see exactly where your money is going and making it easier to avoid overspending.

Another fantastic option is Goodbudget, a digital version of the envelope system, where you allocate money to specific categories, like groceries, and track spending in real-time.

And remember to plan for the unexpected. The grocery store can be a landmine of temptations—chocolate-covered almonds, anyone? Allow yourself some wiggle room for treats or those spontaneous cravings. Make it a line item in your budget so you don’t feel guilty when you reach for that artisanal cheese.

And before heading out, do a full sweep of your pantry so you know what you’ve got and don’t end up with a sixth jar of pickles you didn’t need. Planning meals around what you already have saves money and cuts down on food waste—a win for your wallet and the planet.

Meal Planning Made Easy: Must-Have Apps

Speaking of meal planning, this isn’t just a strategy for fitness buffs or aspiring chefs. It’s a lifesaver for anyone looking to save a buck or two (or twenty). Start by writing down what you plan to cook for the week or month. Get specific! Don’t just list “dinner.” Write “spaghetti with marinara, side salad.” This way, you’re shopping with purpose, not just wandering aimlessly down the pasta aisle.

Meal planning is one of the most effective ways to control your grocery spending, reduce food waste, and save time. By planning meals in advance, you’re less likely to buy unnecessary items or give in to impulse buys.

Apps like Mealime, Paprika and AnyList are designed to make meal planning simple and fun. Mealime allows you to choose recipes for the week, then creates a grocery list based on those ingredients. The app even integrates with grocery delivery services to have everything sent straight to your door!

With Paprika, you can save recipes from your favorite blogs, plan meals, and create shopping lists all in one place. These apps cut down on time spent figuring out what to cook, keeping you organized while ensuring you only buy what you need.

AnyList is another great app to check out. It simplifies meal planning and grocery shopping by letting you create and share lists, organize recipes, and schedule meals—all in one place.

Shop Smart, Not Hard: Store Apps & Curbside Pickup Hacks

If you’re prone to impulse buys—guilty as charged—consider shopping online and opting for curbside pickup. When you’re not wandering through the aisles, it’s much harder to fall victim to the lure of end-cap displays or those “buy one, get one” deals on things you don’t need.

Most major grocery chains like Walmart, Kroger, and Target have their own apps with built-in perks, including digital coupons, loyalty rewards, and pickup options. These store apps also allow you to compare prices before you shop, helping you make the most of every dollar.

Another advantage of using store apps is convenience. Many stores offer same-day curbside pickup, so you can order everything you need, schedule a pickup, and avoid stepping inside the store altogether—saving both time and money.

For families, get everyone involved in the shopping process. Make it a game for the kids! Have them help scan coupons, pick produce, or compare prices. It’s a great way to teach them about budgeting early on and makes grocery shopping a family affair.

Go Big or Go Home: Bulk Up Your Savings

Buying in bulk isn’t just for big families or prepping for an apocalypse—it’s one of the smartest ways to stretch your grocery budget. The key? Focus on non-perishables like pasta, rice, canned goods, and cleaning supplies. These items are long-lasting and perfect for stocking up at a lower price per unit.

For perishables, bulk buying can still work in your favor if you split the haul with friends, family, or neighbors. Got a sweet deal on a giant carton of strawberries? Share the bounty and the savings while reducing food waste.

To take it a step further, food-sharing apps like Olio and Too Good to Go make it easy to share surplus food or snag discounted groceries from local businesses. Not only do you save money, but you also help combat food waste in your community—talk about a win-win!

How Grocery Apps Make Budget-Friendly Shopping Easy

Grocery shopping has evolved, and so have the tools to help you stay on budget. Meal planning apps keep you organized and focused, ensuring every ingredient you buy has a purpose. Grocery apps like Ibotta and Flipp offer cashback and digital coupons, turning your shopping trips into money-saving opportunities. And when you combine these with budgeting apps like YNAB, you can control spending down to the last dollar.

These apps are game changers for budget-conscious shoppers. They take the hassle out of grocery planning, turn saving money into a seamless process, and help you manage your finances—all from your phone. You can eat well, spend wisely, and still stay within your budget. So, go forth, download, and save!

Groceries are a necessary evil, but they don’t have to drain your wallet. You can take the sting out of that weekly grocery run with a little strategy—think digital coupons, smart budgeting, meal planning, and bulk buying. So, go forth and conquer the aisles, fellow savvy shoppers.

I just learned about Supercook on another blog. It a free app that comes at the issue from the other direction and helps you see what you can make with the ingredients you already have on hand. Very helpful in planning to make the best use of things you’ve already purchased, be more aware of staple items you might want to keep on hand or just make it til payday and still feed your family well in a financial crunch. I have not tried it yet but found the demonstration intriguing! In the demo the app found thousands of recipes that could be made from the ingredients the test subject already had in her pantry and fridge.

I like the https://www.copymethat.com/ app to save recipes. It has the option to create a meal plan and a shopping list. Sounds like the Paprika you mention in the article. I used the free version for a while, but as much as I used it, I bought the subscription (one time-for life, very reasonably priced for the use).
