Equipment

  • 9-inch pie pan (at least 1 1/4 inches deep)
  • Skillet
  • Mixing bowls

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup small curd whole cottage cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 cups 8 oz shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 3/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1 6 oz can tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup Master Mix* or Bisquick
  • 1 cup water or milk if using Bisquick
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 eggs
  • Chopped fresh parsley optional, for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 400°F. Grease a 9-inch pie pan that’s at least 1 1/4 inches deep.
  • Cook the ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat, stirring occasionally until browned. Drain excess fat.
  • Layer the cottage cheese and Parmesan cheese in the pie pan.
  • Stir 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, Italian seasoning, and tomato paste into the cooked beef until well combined. Spoon evenly over the cheese layer.
  • In a bowl, stir together Master Mix, water, salt, pepper, and eggs until smooth. Pour over the pie pan ingredients.
  • Bake 30–35 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup mozzarella cheese over the top and bake 1–2 minutes more, until melted.
  • Let the pie rest 5 minutes before slicing. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired.

Notes

Master Mix tip: If you’re using Bisquick, swap milk for water to account for the milk already in Master Mix. Click here for the Master Mix recipe →
Sauce option: Heat leftover spaghetti sauce to serve alongside for extra flavor.
Make-ahead: Assemble the pie ahead of time, refrigerate, and bake a few extra minutes if chilled.
Cheese swaps: Use provolone, Fontina, or a mix of cheeses if you want a different flavor profile.
