Equipment

  • Garden sprayer

Ingredients

  • 1 gallon white vinegar 5% acidity
  • 1 cup table salt
  • 1 teaspoon liquid dish soap

Instructions

  • Pour the vinegar into a container larger than a gallon, so you've got room to shake.
  • Add the salt, seal the lid, and shake until it mostly dissolves. It won't all the way, and that's fine.
  • Stir in the dish soap.
  • Pour the mixture into your garden sprayer.
  • On a dry, sunny day, soak the weeds thoroughly, avoiding anything you want to keep.
  • Let it sit. You'll see wilting within a few hours.

Notes

This one's permanent. The salt sterilizes the soil, so only use it where you never want anything growing again, driveways, sidewalk cracks, gravel paths. If you're clearing a spot you plan to replant, skip the salt entirely and use straight vinegar with a teaspoon of dish soap instead. Reapply as needed on stubborn weeds, and always spray on a still day so it doesn't drift onto plants you love.
