Equipment

  • Standard drip coffee maker
  • Coffee filter
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Stirring spoon

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup ground coffee
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 2 1/2 cups cold water
  • 2 1-ounce squares semi-sweet baking chocolate, chopped
  • 1 cup half-and-half
  • 1/2 cup whipped cream or thawed whipped topping

Instructions

  • Place the ground coffee in a filter and set it in the brew basket of your coffee maker.
  • Add the sugar and almond extract to the empty carafe.
  • Pour the cold water into the coffee maker and brew as usual.
  • While the coffee is brewing, microwave the chopped chocolate and half-and-half in a medium microwave-safe bowl on high for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes, stirring at the 1-minute mark and again when fully melted.
  • Add the melted chocolate mixture to the brewed coffee and stir until well blended.
  • Pour into four large mugs and top each with whipped cream or whipped topping. Serve warm.

Notes

Go easy on the almond extract. Just a little goes a long way.
For a lighter version, swap half-and-half for whole milk.
Add a drizzle of chocolate syrup over the whipped cream for an extra-pretty finish.
This one is best served immediately while the chocolate is silky and smooth.
