- 1/4 cup ground coffee
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
- 2 1/2 cups cold water
- 2 1-ounce squares semi-sweet baking chocolate, chopped
- 1 cup half-and-half
- 1/2 cup whipped cream or thawed whipped topping
Place the ground coffee in a filter and set it in the brew basket of your coffee maker.
Add the sugar and almond extract to the empty carafe.
Pour the cold water into the coffee maker and brew as usual.
While the coffee is brewing, microwave the chopped chocolate and half-and-half in a medium microwave-safe bowl on high for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes, stirring at the 1-minute mark and again when fully melted.
Add the melted chocolate mixture to the brewed coffee and stir until well blended.
Pour into four large mugs and top each with whipped cream or whipped topping. Serve warm.
Go easy on the almond extract. Just a little goes a long way.
For a lighter version, swap half-and-half for whole milk.
Add a drizzle of chocolate syrup over the whipped cream for an extra-pretty finish.
This one is best served immediately while the chocolate is silky and smooth.
