September is The Best Month of the Year to Shop These 13 Things

Waiting to buy things until they’re on sale is the best way to punch inflation in the face! September is notoriously the month of the year that these 13 things go on sale—the best time to buy if you need them.

Oh, how I love September! It has autumn and new beginnings written all over it. That’s how it feels for me (even more so than January) with a fresh start on a new school year, perhaps a refreshed budget, and updated personal goals.

September brings predictable bargains—some that could be considered extreme! So buckle up as we head into my favorite time of the year, not only for sweater weather, pumpkin pie, and apple cider but also for bargains! Oh, how I love September! It has autumn and new beginnings written all over it. That’s how it feels for me (even more so than January) with a fresh start at a new school year, perhaps a refreshed budget, and updated personal goals.

Smart savers

Savvy savers don’t buy things on a whim whenever a passing desire hits them from out of left field. They know what to buy and when.

When these intelligent shoppers find bargains on items they use up, they stock up with enough to last until the next time that item goes on sale. And for sure, they know what to buy in September.

New models of all kinds of products are hitting the shelves, and that’s great news for bargain hunters. September will be packed with plenty of great deals.

Major appliances

This is the time of year when appliance manufacturers are rolling out their 2023 models, which means retailers need to eliminate the 2022 models they hold in inventory. Granted, this year has been anything but typical, but still, I am expecting discounts again as high as 40% off at stores like Home Depot, Lowes, and Best Buy. If you’re looking to upgrade your refrigerator, washer, dryer, or other large appliances, September is just might be the right time to do that.

Plants and trees

Garden centers are clearing out their stock of summer plants, trees, and shrubs. Check your local nurseries and garden departments in stores like Home Depot and Lowes for super deals! You still have plenty of time to plant and grow these things well before winter sets in.

The local tree farm where I live has its annual $.50 tree sale in full bloom—buy one at regular price and get a second for just fifty cents. Look around, you might have something similar where you live.

Gardening gear

If you need new garden tools for summer outdoor work, know they’re one more item that sees serious discounts as the growing season winds down.

Older iPhones

We can expect Apple to drop the price on newly discontinued and older models in the coming months. The secondary market will be flooded with gently used phones, too, as folks will be getting what they can for their current phone to upgrade to the newest, latest, and greatest. Typically, September has been a great month to grab a gently used iPhone.

Outdoor grills

Some retailers have had difficulty keeping grills in stock over the summer due to virus-related shipping delays. However, those grills and accessories that remain need to be moved out at bargain prices.

The folks at Deal News tell us we can look for electric models to be around $70, while charcoal models will likely be as low as $86. Expect charcoal smokers to cost just over $100, and for hybrid models to fall to around $150.

Mattresses

Labor Day weekend is when retailers feature their best mattress deals of the years. You can expect especially good deals at Sam’s Club, HomeDepot.com, JCPenney, and Big Lots. The competition is fierce.

Clothing

Labor Day is routinely a great time to stock up on summer clothing. Retailers need room for all the winter wear, so you can expect big discounts at Target, Old Navy, JCPenney, and TJMaxx.

Look for discounts of up to 75% off at retailers like Belk, Frye, and Gap Factory. While some deals will be more modest — Columbia took 25% off select gear last Labor Day, for instance — many clothing stores will offer up to 50% off, at least. Look to retailers like Hanes, Cole Haan, Backcountry, and American Apparel for these kinds of savings.

Denim

Jeans are very closely identified with back-to-school. Now that school is in session and the big rush to buy new jeans has wound down, denim goes on sale as stores desperately need to unload surplus inventory.

Bicycles

With summer winding down, September is an excellent time to purchase bicycles. Plenty of people use bikes year-round, but demand drops when it cools off, so many outdoor retailers discount these items to clear the shelves.

Bedding

While you’re shopping for a new mattress, you might as well pick up discounted bedding to go with it. September is a very popular month when it comes to putting bedding—sheets, blankets, quilts, comforters—on sale! Take advantage for sure, provided this is something you need.

Lawnmowers

Need a new lawnmower? September is your month, but don’t delay. Home and garden stores are dropping the prices like crazy on models they have in stock. Especially the big ones like ride-on mowers. Those things take up a lot of space they need for all of the winter season merchandise on its way to their warehouses and showrooms. Take advantage of the great deals on floor models and other items now considered to be overstocked.

Airfare

It’s not a guarantee, but you might find a reasonable rate for holiday airfare by shopping in September. Generally, about six to eight weeks before departure is when you want to book airfare for the best prices, so the tail end of September will bring the right time frame for Thanksgiving flights. Online travel agencies will likely offer sales for Labor Day, but the discounts might not be as great as they were pre-pandemic.

In-season produce

September offers super opportunities to enjoy in-season produce. Look for in-season bargains on apples, cantaloupe, figs, grapes, mangoes, persimmons, and pomegranates. Tomatoes are at their peak this month. The first tastes of fall are showing up with ripe acorn squash, beets, butternut squash, cauliflower, eggplant, green beans, lettuce, mushrooms, okra, peppers, pumpkins, spinach, sweet potatoes, and Swiss chard. An abundant harvest is always such a blessing.
