Humidity—Not too High, Not Too Low, But Just Right

Humidity is a popular topic among friends and neighbors here where I live in northern Colorado. It’s like we have none! Well, not exactly, but it averages in the low to mid 20 percent during the summer and fall months, and that’s dry! We have a humidifier in our home and it runs 24/7 year round.

And then there’s the matter of high humidity—a troublesome condition for many—which came to mind when I heard from Will a few days ago.

DEAR MARY: I enjoy reading your daily emails, particularly ones on appliances. Do you have any recommendations for a quality dehumidifier for the home? Thanks in advance! Will

DEAR WILL: Apparently we make a great team, you and I, because I love testing, reviewing and recommending household appliances. I am confident and very happy to recommend two different high-quality machines (depending on the size of the space you have), both of which just happen to come from Frigidaire.

FRIGIDAIRE 50-pint Dehumidifier.  This 50-pints-per-day machine will give you continuous operation in an area up to 1,500-3,000 sq. ft. It will help to eliminate bacteria in the air, room odors, mold, mildew and other airborne particles. This machine is very quiet, and allows you to control the exact percentage of humidity in the room. For the money, I don’t think you can beat this option

FRIGIDAIRE  70-pint Dehumidifier. You will want to opt for this 70-pints-per-day unit for an area up to 2,500 sq. ft. It too will protect your home from mold and mildew and airborne particles that can make breathing difficult for some people. This is a remarkable machine that operates quietly and efficiently. Additional features include a digital humidity readout, 24-hour on/off timer and control lock. This is a fantastic dehumidifier. If the additional cost work with your budget, this would be my first choice.

DEAR MARY: I had a similar problem (Help! My Shark Vacuum is Acting Awkward and Stubborn) with my Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional, which I love. The machine was making a noise, but only when the brush roll was engaged. I contacted Shark customer support (800-798-7398) and based on my description of the problem, they shipped me the whole bottom piece of the vacuum. The assumption was that the motor that runs the brush roll was going out. My machine was less than a year old. That fixed it. I love my Shark even more now! Theresa

DEAR THERESA: Thanks for this great feedback. So far I have not had reason to contact customer service regarding my Sharks (yes, I do have multiple, all of which I have purchased for the purpose of testing and reviewing, but then end up loving). But should the need arise, I am so happy to know that Shark has responsive and helpful customer support.

DEAR MARY: I saw your article on getting discounts with Dental Savings Plans, like a membership type thing. Which do you think is the best plan for a parent and a child? Is there anything like this available for vision? Thanks so much. Wayne

DEAR WAYNE: Actually many of the insurance companies now offering these Dental Savings Plans, which I wrote about in “… Put a Big Smile on Your Face,” include and/or offer companion savings plans for vision care, hearing and pharmaceuticals in their Dental Savings Plans. Remember this is not dental insurance, nor would it be vision insurance or prescription medication insurance. Dental Savings Plans are membership plans, similar to the memberships we know (and love) at warehouse discount clubs like Sam’s Club and Costco. To learn more, go to EverydayCheapskate.com/DentalPlans, and click on any of the available plans. From there look at a plan’s specific details to see how it lines up with your family’s needs, together with the location of the dental (vision, prescription) office or location offering that plan in your area.

DEAR MARY: I read your article on dental savings plans, signed up for a family plan and the very next day we saved $600 on my husband’s appointment. Thanks for the information. I am letting all my friends in on this well kept secret! Gail

DEAR GAIL: Great news! I am thrilled to learn that a Dental Savings Plan is working for you and your family.

I also love my Shark Vacuum cleaner having purchased it on your recommendation. I had to talk my husband into it and now he sometimes uses it instead of his shop vac, it’s that good and strong. A few years before I even started reading your column, my husband bought me an iron for Christmas, only because I asked for one. We have a rule, no household things as gifts unless specifically asked for. Well, he bought me a Shark iron. He researched and found it to be the best. It did cost a little more but has been well worth it. I love it! It heats faster and hotter than any other iron I have had, and that is one every year or two. They just stopped working. The Shark is great, it has a very good and easy cleaning feature. It even works well on linen! Thanks for the words of advice and encouragement, Mary B, PA
