For more than two decades I have been a loyal Apple fan. I’ve had several iPhones, four MacBook Pro laptop computers and most recently, an iPad. It’s not been a completely trouble-free relationship, but for the most part, quite pleasant.
Recently, needing to replace my decrepit MacBook Pro, I went to the Apple store, took a salesperson-guided tour of the new model that would be released in a couple of days, placed the order (ouch!) and arranged for it to be shipped and left.
You could have knocked me over with a feather when it arrived. Apple did it again—completely changed the charging system/configuration. Now, my two extra chargers (I need a total of three because I just do) won’t work with the new computer! What choice would I have but to fork out another $79 each for two more chargers?! I didn’t know, but I was going to make it my business to find out!
I discovered that our friends at ESR have released two fast-charging, foldable wall chargers, compatible with MBP 2018 (and a number of iPhones, Samsung 9 and other devices, too). But honestly, I was skeptical.
There’s a lot of third-party junk out there that’s not reliable or advisable to use with our high-end electronics. ESR offered to send me a charger to test with my MBP (thanks, guys!)
I’ve been using it long enough to be thrilled! People, this is not junk! At less than $20 (less than $30 for the two-port option), either version of ESRs new USB-C wall charger comes in at half the size and half the weight of Apple’s USB-C charger. Just fantastic.
USB-C WALL CHARGER
ESR USB-C Charger, 18W USB-C Wall Charger power delivery wall charger compatible with Macbook Pro 2018, plus newer iPhones, Samsung S9, iPad Pro 12.9/10.5 and more. (Power cord not included.) Details HERE.
ESR USB-C 30W Charger has the 18W power delivery port for USB-C (see above) plus a 12W USB port for other devices. Details HERE.Here’s my non-technical comparison between the Apple USB-C wall charging block and my ESR 18W USB-C wall charger:
I used the Apple charger for a month then switched to the ESR and have been using it long enough to confidently offer my personal comparison of the two.
The Apple charger box is heavy! It’s awkward and difficult to plug into a regular wall outlet (no idea why, but it’s an unreasonably tight fit). But the big problem for me: the Apple charging box gets so hot while charging, I can’t touch it without a hot pad. Can this be safe? It does seem to charge fast.
The ESR charger is not junk, let me make that very clear! The 18W version is half the size and a fraction of the weight of the Apple charger and less than $20. It charges to 50% in just 30 minutes and gets warm during charging. It’s compact, handles easily and in my opinion—fantastic, and an excellent alternative to Apple’s clunky troublesome charger.
The only difference in the 30W version is that it has a second regular USB port, which kinda’ does makes it twice as nice.
One more reason to love ESR—they’ve sent me a quantity of USB-C chargers to share them with you! I can’t think of a better time than today for another Everyday Cheapskate GIVEAWAY!
