There’s only one thing I love more than readers asking for my opinion on stuff. It’s when they act on my advice and then write back to tell me how happy they are. I don’t boast 100% success, but getting close 😉
Today, enjoy two inquiries and one follow-up report.
Wesley writes: Which home security system do you recommend, both for economy and efficiency?
The company SimpliSafe has revolutionized the home security business, in my opinion, for these reasons:
- It is a system you own and can easily install yourself—designed to be DIY.
- It’s wireless, which means no drilling in window and door frames, no need to fish wires through tiny holes.
- Includes a back-up battery that kicks in and protects you for a full 24 hours in the event of a power outage.
- It’s a system that can be expanded easily, which means you can start with basic and then expand it with additional sensors, a camera, etc., later.
- Monitoring (optional).
The SimpliSafe Alpha (basic system) is my pick for Best Inexpensive™ home security system.
Tom asks: What is your opinion of a wireless charging pad for mobile phones? I have a Samsung Note 8 but don’t want to shell out Samsung’s hefty price to try it out. Any thoughts?
Wireless charging pads are super handy because instead of fiddling with your phone’s charging cord, you simply set the phone on the pad and walk away (or go to sleep). Several third-party manufacturers now offer compatible wireless charging pads for your particular phone, and we’ve looked at all of them. Here at EC Central we’ve been testing the ESR Wireless Fast-Charging Pad for Samsung Galaxy S9/S9 Plus/S8/Note 8/S7/S7 Edge and iPhone iPhone X/iPhone 8/8 Plus and are very pleased with its performance.
Here’s some good news: For a very limited time, the folks at ESR have offered Everyday Cheapskate readers this promotional code MHECESRO that will cut that price in half at Amazon checkout. At that price, I suggest you give this charging pad a try, as it is definitely compatible with your Samsung Note 8. Note: This wireless charging pad plugs into a USB port. An a/c adapter is available but not included.
Rachel reports: I can’t thank you enough for recommending Eufy Cordless* stick vac. I don’t think I’ve ever used any home appliance/tool as much as my Eufy! I love that it holds a charge for such a long time and that it is so lightweight. I followed your tutorial for how to clean Eufy. Mine really needed it, and now I know how to keep it clean. I’m thinking of getting another Eufy HomeVac just so I always have one handy.

Welcome to the Eufy Fan Club, Rachel. I couldn’t agree with you more. Eufy is my favorite household worker bee, too. Guess what? Eufy HomeVac Lightweight Cordless Upright-Style Vacuum Cleaner* (I call it a stick vacuum because while it picks up surface debris on low-pile carpet, it is meant for hard surface floors).
It’s a good day!
*Update: As of Jan. 2019, Eufy Cordless Stick Vac has been discontinued. But not to worry! Deik Cordless Stick Vac is all that Eufy was, and more. We love it and think you will, too. Check it out!
