With Knowledge Comes Savings

There are many things that aren’t negotiable. The salesperson at Macy’s won’t negotiate with you over the price of that newly arrived collection. But a ring at your local jeweler, or produce at the farmer’s market? Well, that’s a different story. And add magazine renewals to the list.

KNOW YOUR PRICES. When I receive a magazine renewal offer in the mail, I first check the website for the current online subscription price. Then I call customer service and request the same price, which is always lower. They are eager to lower my subscription price to keep me as a customer. One magazine even went lower than the published online price! Nancy, Texas

STOCKING UP SAVES. Stockpiling chicken when it’s on sale is a great money saver, but it’s only the beginning. When whole chickens go on sale for $.59 to $.87 per pound, buy three. Once cut up, grill four breasts, four thighs and six drumsticks. Freeze what you don’t immediately eat. Freeze (to cook later) six wings and two thighs. Also, debone and freeze two breasts. Finally, cook the giblets, tail, any fat, neck and bones in 3 1/2 quarts water for 3 hours. Add poultry seasoning. Once cool, cut the meat off the bones and neck, and mince the meat. Freeze chopped giblets for later, and freeze the chicken broth.

All this will cost about $14. Once cut up and separated, you have chicken that would cost over $50. It really pays for itself. Plus, the broth alone would be at least $6. Roy, California

PAINTING CLEANUP EASE. To make painting cleanup easier, line your roller pan with Glad Press ‘n Seal. When finished painting, remove the Press ‘n Seal and toss. This works better than regular plastic wrap, since it really sticks to the pan and doesn’t bunch up. RT, Minnesota

HEALTHY MOUTH SAVES MONEY. For years I’ve been lackadaisical about my dental hygiene. I’d brush, floss and go to the dentist twice a year for cleanings. In the past 10 years, I’ve had multiple cavities, crowns and root canals. I’ve had more than $10,000 in dental work, much of which I paid out of pocket.

I decided to get serious about cutting my dental spending. I talked to my dentist about a recommended daily regimen to prevent cavities. She told me to brush 2 minutes after every meal or sugary snack, floss every night and use a mouthwash to kill germs. She talked to me about what to look for when buying dental supplies and recommended some brands. The hygienist coached me on good brushing and flossing techniques. I now spend maybe $12 a month and 10 minutes a day, and my oral health has never been better. My last bill from my dentist was a hundred dollars instead of a thousand. Bobbie, North Dakota

Years ago I discovered by looking at my receipts when I purchased an item at Macy’s the tax was rounded up, but when I returned an item the tax was rounded down leaving me minus a penny. I wrote to Macy’s headquarters based on the principle of the matter and they issued a 30% coupon off ANYthing. My mom and I bought mattresses and when we told the sales person my store they threw in a bed frame for a penny.

Wow! How amazing that the clerk was even authorized to add the frame!

I’d like to comment on the magazine subscription game. A while back I ignored a renewal request because I wasn’t sure I wanted to continue the magazine. Yesterday I received another request with a lower price (almost irresistible ) plus a $3 off coupon enclosed that would bring down the price to $2.99 for a year’s subscription. Now, that’s what I call a bargain….less than .25 per magazine.

My daughter passed in Jan and in talking with the funeral home we asked for a lower price and he took 1,000.00 off the price I never would have dreamed one could do that.

Condolences on the passing of your daughter. No parent should ever have to endure that pain.

I worked for a funeral home in college and can assure you that prices are negotiable. The mark-up on services and supplies is unbelievably high. You can, and should (if you’re able to) compare prices for what you want for your loved one.

I enrolled in college at age 45 and found two jobs near the college to reduce transportation costs. One of two cars died, and I needed another used one. I called four dealers and got prices. After looking at each one, my local dealer gave me a price of $4,300. I borrowed that exact amount from the bank, and went back to him. He had not included license, title transfer, and prep costs, but because I has the check in hand, after some serious negotiating, I bought the car for the quoted price. My daughter and I stood our ground and came out ahead.

My son had an emergency appendectomy which came to $82,000. We do not have medical insurance. By speaking with all thirteen of the various health providers involved, we got the medical bills reduced to $11,000.

Our house had been on the market empty for about a year and had already had the price lowered once. We offered 10% below that “as is” and were accepted the same night. Turns out there was a problem with the septic system backing up during a heavy rain. Even after solving that problem by moving the leaching bed, we saved roughly $10,000.

yes, you can negotiate with the sales person at macy!! just ask! i have gotten discounts on all kinds of things at major department stores. if you find ANY kind of minor defect in any item they sell, ask a manager to give you a discount. if it’s already on sale, ask for a better price. the worst they can do is say no. i actually saved a friend i was shopping with $75 on a Macy wood coffee table that had a scratch on it. it went from a sale price of $300 to $225 just for asking!
