The Gift Card Challenge (We Have Our Winners!)

Posted on by Mary Hunt in Mary's Life 36 Comments

How many gift cards do you have stuck in the back of your wallet, in your drawers or car’s console? Or worse, how many gift cards are you sure you have … somewhere (but you can’t exactly find them)?

Photo credt to y2bk’s photostream

Here’s the challenge: Name them one by one, including outstanding balances for each, in the comments below. These must be gift cards that you own, not your kids or spouse or any other person. The HONOR SYSTEM will prevail.

Tomorrow, I will declare two winners in two separate categories. However, I am not going to tell you the criteria for determining winners.

Our two winners in the Gift Card Challenge will receive valuable prizes, to be announced on tomorrow, July 11. I will select winners at 4:00PM Pacific, and notify by email. Once confirmed that selected winners are real people with valid email addresses, I will announce them and the prizes they’ve won.

You can call the toll free number on the back of your gift cards to learn current outstanding values.

Let the competition begin …

Edit: 7/11/12 4:19PM  We have our winners!!!

Gift Card with the Smallest Balance. Keeping track of how much remains on a gift card is not only smart, it’s pretty darned frugal. The winner in this category is Heather who admits to carrying a Sears Gift Card with $.34 remaining. We are not sure what Heather’s plans are for this remaining balance, but we are certain it will make a great story.

Largest Total Balance in Unused Gift Cards. Nearly $8 billion in gifts cards will go unused each year. Clearly the winner in this category, Ellen, who admits to carrying 17 Gift Cards totaling $502.23 is doing her part. We are hopeful that this prestigious award will jog Ellen’s memory and will spur her on to use those cards soon.

Each of our Winners receives (what else?) a $30 Gift Card to the DPL Store! Watch your email inbox for further instructions.

Thanks to all competitors. We’ll be having more contests in the future so stick close.

I’m proud to say I have just one. I just received it from my son on Sunday for my birthday. It has a value of $ 40.00 and it is from Bed, Bath and Beyond, my favorite store and I can’t wait to go there and use it tomorrow!

  • woodjams

I have two, both in my wallet. One is for LL Bean for a returned shirt for $19.50 and the other is for Marshalls/TJ Maxx for $25 rec’d as a gift. No fees are associated with either, and each is earmarked to be used toward a larger purchase later this month.

  • Janine

I have a “Build a Bear” card worth $10 and a card for a local inn for $25 off dinner received as an anniversary gift about 20 years ago. It doesn’t have an expiration date but I am almost to embarrassed to use it!

    • http://www.everydaycheapskate.com/ Mary Hunt

Janine … Girl! Would you be embarrassed to use an old $20 bill? Use it with joy and soon, while $20 still buys something at that Inn. :)

  • Julia

I have one, Kohl’s for $34.50. I got it three years ago using Discover card points. I was going on vacation and thought I would use it. Guess I should get on line and order something to use it up.

    • julia

Thanks for the inspiration. I got on line this morning, bought some underwear I needed and no longer have any gift cards!

I currently have seven in my wallet. Target, Barnes & Noble, Crate & Barrel, Yankee Candle, Olive Garden, and Starbucks (2). Some are partially used and I don’t know current balances. Some I haven’t used at all, yet. I personally hate gift cards and think they are the biggest rip-off of all time! Please give me cash, so I can spend it where I want, when I want and get change back if necessary, thank you very much!

    • http://www.everydaycheapskate.com/ Mary Hunt

Jan … we need the exact remaining balances to make sure you’re in the running to be a winner!

Panera has 2.67 and from a local restaurant, Braans, I have $9.37 left on it. I try to use my gift cards and combine them with coupons or specials. Extends their worth! :)

See it pays to be a facebook fan of Mary Hunt/ Debtproof Living. I still don’t know what I will do with that last 34 cents. I might have to buy a bolt or something, but I will continue to wait and see. Thank goodness there are no fees to this card and no expiration date.
